Review Examines Structural and Morphological Modifications in Layered Double Hydroxide Catalysts

A review published in Advanced Composites and Hybrid Materials analyzes morphology and structural modification strategies for layered double hydroxide (LDH)-based composites in energy catalysis. Typical of inorganic layered particles, layered double hydroxides have demonstrated prodigious potential across applications in electrocatalysis and photocatalysis. However, the authors note that most existing investigations have pursued the optimization of layered double hydroxide functions through laminate composition, interlaminar anionic species, and particle size, while paying comparatively less attention to how morphology and structure influence catalytic performance.

Beginning with an overview of fundamental layered double hydroxide structures and characteristics, the review presents a comprehensive assessment of preparation methods for conventional hexagonal sheets alongside special morphologies, including spherical, polyhedral, nanowire, and ring structures. Because layered double hydroxides often need to be combined with other functional groups to improve overall performance, the paper examines the regulation of composite morphology according to reaction type, synthesis conditions, and matrix surface properties, while evaluating the applications of these materials in electrocatalytic and photocatalytic systems.

The review specifically focuses on recent developments in modifying layered double hydroxides, examining changes in electronic structure, morphology, interfacial interactions, and the synergistic catalytic impact achieved with noble metal catalysts to enhance performance. Ultimately, the authors outline future directions, identifying the key issues and research paths required for the rational design and practical implementation of layered double hydroxide-based materials in energy catalysis.
