MOF-Derived Carbons Show Promise as Next-Generation Electrode Materials

A review published in the journal Ionics examines metal-organic framework-derived carbon materials and their composites as electrode materials for lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries. Authored by Akhilash Mohanan Pillai, Patteth S. Salini, Bibin John and Mercy TD, the review highlights recent advances in MOF-derived carbons, with particular emphasis on the relationships among MOF precursor chemistry, structural characteristics, and electrochemical performance.

According to the review, carbon materials derived from metal-organic frameworks have attracted considerable interest for advanced energy-storage applications owing to their tunable composition, hierarchical porosity, and diverse structural features. It critically examines how different MOF structures influence pore architecture, electrical conductivity, ion-storage characteristics, and overall energy-storage performance.

The review also discusses key challenges associated with the MOF-to-carbon transformation, including scalability, sustainability, and cost effectiveness. Overall, the authors conclude that MOF-derived carbons and their composites exhibit significant potential as next-generation electrode materials. Through composition engineering and the development of scalable synthesis strategies, these materials can achieve enhanced specific capacity, initial Coulombic efficiency, and cycling stability, making them promising candidates for practical lithium-ion and sodium-ion battery applications.
