Stem Cell Reports appoints Bonnet and Relaix as associate editors

The International Society for Stem Cell Research has appointed Dominique Bonnet, Ph.D., and Frederic Relaix, Ph.D., as Associate Editors of Stem Cell Reports, the society’s open-access, peer-reviewed journal. Announced on September 18, 2026, the appointments bring research expertise in human hematopoietic stem cells, malignant stem-cell biology, skeletal muscle stem cells and disease modeling to the journal’s editorial team. The announcement is a business and editorial development rather than a new scientific result, but it reflects the journal’s stated effort to cover both fundamental stem cell biology and research aimed at translating findings into medicine.

Janet Rossant, Ph.D., Editor-in-Chief of Stem Cell Reports, said the new editors’ scientific breadth and experience across basic and translational research would strengthen the publication. Bonnet studies the molecular and cellular programs that regulate normal human hematopoietic stem cells, including how oncogenic mutations disrupt those programs and contribute to myeloid malignancies. Relaix investigates the mechanisms controlling skeletal muscle stem cells during development, regeneration, aging and disease, with a program that combines developmental biology, genetics, genomics, epigenetics and preclinical modeling.

Bonnet is a group leader at the Francis Crick Institute and a professor in the Division of Biosciences at University College London in the United Kingdom. She is also an honorary professor at Imperial College London and King’s College London and was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2023. Her research examines how malignant stem cells interact with and remodel the bone marrow microenvironment, as well as how that niche may influence disease evolution. Her group has more recently developed humanized bone marrow niche models to study interactions among normal human hematopoietic stem cells, leukemic human hematopoietic stem cells and their surrounding microenvironment. These models are research tools for investigating cellular relationships; the announcement does not report clinical outcomes from their use.

Relaix is Full Professor and Vice-Dean for Research of the Faculty of Medicine and Health at Université Paris-Est Créteil in France, where he directs the Muscle Stem Cells and Therapies Team and the Muscle Development, Repair & Therapies Group. He also heads the AFM-Telethon strategic pole Translamuscle. His work considers how muscle stem cells maintain and repair tissue and how their function changes with disease. It also addresses neuromuscular disorders, including Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies, through disease models and the investigation of potential therapeutic strategies. As with Bonnet’s humanized bone marrow systems, these are preclinical or modeling approaches, and the appointment announcement provides no evidence of a new treatment’s safety or effectiveness in people.

Stem Cell Reports publishes original research presenting conceptual or practical advances of broad interest to stem cell biologists and clinicians, with scope extending from basic discoveries to translational and clinical studies. The journal is an ISSCR publication and a Cell Press partner journal. The association of Bonnet and Relaix adds editorial expertise in two distinct areas: the regulation and disease biology of blood-forming stem cells, and the development, repair and disease-related functions of muscle stem cells. Their roles as associate editors are intended to support the journal’s editorial work, not to represent new studies by either researcher. The announcement also notes that ISSCR operates across more than 80 countries as a global, cross-disciplinary scientific organization focused on advancing stem cell research and its translation into medicine.
