Stable Free Oxoboranes Isolated via CO-Triggered Transformation of Heterocumulenes

The isolation of oxoboranes featuring a genuine boron–oxygen triple bond ($ ext{RB} ext{≡} ext{O}$) has long been considered a formidable challenge in inorganic chemistry. This difficulty stems primarily from the inherent electron deficiency of the boron atom and the intrinsic instability associated with the $ ext{B≡O}$ linkage. A recent report by researchers has overcome these barriers, successfully reporting the isolation of a stable, free oxoborane under condensed-phase conditions.

This breakthrough was achieved through a sophisticated synthetic strategy involving the carbon monoxide-triggered transformation of a heterocumulene. The resulting oxoborane was meticulously characterized, with single-crystal X-ray diffraction providing definitive proof of a terminal $ ext{B≡O}$ unit within the crystal lattice. Furthermore, electronic structure analyses, supported by computational chemistry, revealed two orthogonal $\pi$ bonds. These findings are consistent with the presence of a highly polarized triple bond, providing robust structural evidence for the existence of this elusive species.

The mechanistic pathway leading to this stable oxoborane has been elucidated through detailed studies. The researchers support a specific pathway involving carbon monoxide coordination, followed by an insertion and isomerization process. This investigation not only confirms the structural integrity of the oxoborane but also demonstrates its functional versatility. The resulting oxoborane exhibits ambiphilic reactivity, meaning it can readily participate in reactions leading to both neutral and cationic derivatives, opening up new avenues for chemical synthesis.

These findings are highly significant for the field of low-coordinate boron–oxygen chemistry. This advancement addresses a long-standing gap in understanding the stability and reactivity of highly unsaturated boron compounds.

Subject of Research: Isolation and structural characterization of crystalline oxoboranes exhibiting a B–O triple bond.
