Pitching a partial blade span or struts enables rated power regulation, boosts annual energy production, and significantly reduces fatigue loads in troposkein-shaped Darrieus vertical axis wind turbines, according to a modeling study by researchers Daniel Bouzolin and D. Todd Griffith at the University of Texas at Dallas. Reported in a preprint under review for the journal Wind Energy Science, the simulations show that converting a stall-regulated design to pitch control cuts damage equivalent loads across thrust, lateral, and torque directions, establishing a potential foundation for new operating strategies in curved-blade vertical turbines.
While pitch control is widely utilized in conventional horizontal axis wind turbines and straight-bladed H-type vertical axis wind turbines, engineers had not previously implemented it on troposkein-shaped Darrieus rotors because of their prohibitively complex curved blade geometry. To address this structural barrier, the researchers developed a modified rotor architecture that converts a traditional stall-regulated Darrieus turbine into an actively pitched system using partial-span blade pitching, strut pitching, or a combination of both mechanisms.
The aerodynamic and structural performance of the pitch-controlled rotor was evaluated using CACTUS, a free-wake vortex numerical code, and directly compared against the baseline stall-regulated configuration.
