Cell biologist Chouchani named 2026 Blavatnik National Award finalist

Edward Chouchani, PhD, a cell biologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, has been named one of 18 finalists for the 2026 Blavatnik National Awards for Young Scientists. Chouchani, who leads the Chouchani Lab and is a professor of cell biology at Harvard Medical School and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, was selected in the life sciences category for research into how molecules produced as cells break down nutrients help regulate fundamental biological processes. Each finalist will receive $15,000, and three laureates will be announced at an October 6 ceremony at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

The research recognized by the award concerns metabolites, which the announcement defines as small molecules produced when cells convert food into energy and the building blocks required for growth. Chouchani’s work has shown that these molecules can act as signals regulating cellular function, including energy balance, inflammation and cell division. Using mass spectrometry and chemical biology, his research program has identified this previously hidden layer of biological communication. The award release describes the discoveries as opening potential paths toward treatments for cancer and metabolic diseases, but it does not report a clinical trial, an established therapy or results from a prospective human study.

“This recognition is an incredible honor for our lab’s discoveries of new mechanisms by which metabolites regulate biological systems,” Chouchani said. “We are excited to build on this work to define the rules of the language by which core metabolites shape life.” The wording reflects the central objective of his laboratory: determining how core metabolites regulate biological systems and extending earlier findings about their roles in controlling cellular processes. The announcement also says Chouchani’s research has created opportunities to investigate medicines for obesity, cancer, metabolic disease and other human health challenges, identifying applications under investigation rather than treatments already established by the work.

The 2026 awards received 372 nominations from 187 academic and research institutions in 43 states and the District of Columbia. The Blavatnik Family Foundation and The New York Academy of Sciences present the awards to recognize scientific advances by researchers based in the United States who are aged 42 or younger. An independent jury of distinguished scientists evaluates candidates in three categories: physical sciences and engineering, life sciences, and chemical sciences. Beyond Chouchani, the 18 finalists cover fields that include chemistry, biology, engineering, artificial intelligence and astrophysics. The finalists and the three eventual laureates are to be celebrated at the October ceremony in New York.

Len Blavatnik, founder of Access Industries and head of the Blavatnik Family Foundation, said the honored scientists demonstrate why investment in early-career researchers is important to scientific progress and innovation. Nicholas B. Dirks, president and CEO of The New York Academy of Sciences and chair of the awards’ Scientific Advisory Council, said the finalists embody bold ideas, rigorous inquiry and exploration of the unknown. Chouchani’s laboratory has also received support through grants and awards, including the Mark Foundation Emerging Leader Award supporting work connected to cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. His finalist status therefore recognizes an established body of research into metabolite signaling, while the release presents continued work on the rules governing that regulation as the next phase of the program.
