A review published in the Journal of Materials Science assesses the integration of fluorescent and magnetic functionalities into porous organic frameworks, an emerging field aimed at creating materials that are simultaneously visible, quantifiable, and controllable in practical applications. While notable research progress has been achieved in fabricating frameworks that possess either fluorescence or magnetism alone, combining both properties into a single porous architecture remains in its early stages.

The surveyed porous organic frameworks encompass metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks. These porous architectures serve as adaptable platforms for diverse uses owing to their high porosity, structural tunability, and chemical versatility. Introducing dual fluorescent and magnetic capabilities directly into these structural matrices expands their functional utility and responsiveness.

The review systematically outlines synthetic strategies and examines foundational material characteristics, focusing on porosity, fluorescence, and magnetism. The authors highlight emerging applications across multiple disciplines, specifically pointing to opportunities in biomedicine, heavy metal removal, and small-molecule detection.

Significant technical hurdles persist in developing these bifunctional platforms, including synthetic complexity, mutual interference between functional components, and biosafety concerns. To address these limitations, the authors emphasize future directions involving rational design and sustainable manufacturing to guide the fabrication of next-generation multifunctional materials.

The authors note that this work presents the first comprehensive review dedicated specifically to fluorescent magnetic porous frameworks. By providing a systematic overview of this burgeoning field, the review is intended to serve as a foundational reference and inspire continued innovation in the development of next-generation multifunctional materials.
