Highlights from EB 2019 include:
Science Advocacy Town Hall – This American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology event will explore the impact of the political climate on the life science research enterprise. An expert panel will provide briefings on the state of federal investments and policy changes affecting the research community, and an open discussion session will follow. Addressing the Opioid Epidemic Through Science and Policy – Despite the devastating toll of opioid addiction, our society is still struggling to fight the opioid epidemic and find ways to treat patients while preventing addiction. This symposium of the American Society for Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics will address how both opioid research and policy and community initiatives can be used to fight this crisis. Anatomy Plenary Talks on Cell Biology and Bioengineering – The American Association of Anatomists Annual Meeting will feature plenary sessions by esteemed researchers Nenad Bursac, Ph.D., Duke University, and Danelle Devenport, Ph.D., Princeton University. Bursac will present “Stem Cell Engineering for Striated Muscle Modeling and Repair” at 4:45 p.m. Sunday, April 7; Devenport will present “Patterning Morphogenesis via the Planar Cell Polarity Pathway” at 4:45 p.m. Monday, April 8. Exploring Cancer Biomarkers – Genes, proteins and processes occurring in and around tumors offer crucial clues for diagnosing and treating cancer. In this American Society for Investigative Pathology workshop, five leading scientists will discuss promising avenues toward identifying and applying cancer biomarkers. The Microbiome in Health and Disease – Researchers have made many important discoveries about role of the microbiome in health and disease, but there remains much to learn. The American Physiological Society symposium, “Metabolism, Organ Crosstalk, Microbiome and Mechanisms,” will showcase recent progress toward understanding how metabolism and the microbiome relate to the pathophysiology of human diseases.
