On February 3rd, 2020 the European Human Brain Project (HBP) will hold its annual Open Day at Megaron International Conference Centre in Athens, Greece. The Open Day is the biggest annual outreach event of the HBP and presents the latest in neuroscience, brain-inspired technologies, and related research infrastructures both from within and outside the entire project. The event is free and open to the public.

It is followed by the HBP Summit, the three-day annual full assembly of the HBP Consortium, which brings together around 500 scientists from 132 universities, teaching hospitals and research centres across Europe. To find out more and register for the Open Day, visit the following page: https://openday2020.humanbrainproject.eu

The Open Day will present fascinating insights into the human brain from state of the art research, and the new methods and tools that make them possible. Latest developments will be shown on how modern computing technologies enhance our understanding of the human brain, how this knowledge can be applied to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic tools for brain disorders, and how it can inspire new technologies. This year the Open Day is hosted by HBP partner Athena Research and Innovation Center. It takes place under the auspices of his Excellency the President of the Hellenic Republic Mr. Prokopios Pavlopoulos, who will deliver a welcoming address.

The program includes exciting talks by HBP scientists and distinguished guest speakers, as well as a special Science Agora exhibition that includes demos and interactive exhibits presenting the latest developments in human brain research, brain mapping and more. Students can find out about the extensive HBP Education programme, and visitors from scientific and industrial communities can explore collaboration opportunities with experts from the HBP.

This year’s keynote speaker is distinguished professor Christos Papadimitriou, the Donovan family professor of Computer Science at Columbia University. His talk will focus on the contribution of computer science to the study of the brain and intellect.

Prof. Yannis Ioannidis, host of the 2020 HBP Summit and Open Day:

“It is a distinguished pleasure to be hosting in Athens the 7th HBP Summit and Open Day. Greek partners have a pivotal role in developing the HBP infrastructure, so bringing HBP home is a significant recognition of their contribution and of great symbolic value for empowering the local communities in both neuroscience and informatics. The program is packed with exciting presentations and panels; especially the Open Day features a keynote by Christos Papadimitriou, one of the most celebrated computer scientists in the world, as well as talks by many other distinguished scientists on a great variety of issues. I look forward to an inspiring and productive event.”

Prof. Katrin Amunts, Scientific Research Director of the Human Brain Project:

“The Human Brain Project is bringing together Neuroscience, Computing and Data Science on an unprecedented scale. Similar to the way neural networks enable the brain to achieve its incredible function and human behavior, the Human Brain Project has created a Europe-wide network of scientists to understand the human brain and its diseases, derive new approaches in brain medicine, and inspire new technologies such as neuromorphic computing and neurorobotics. EBRAINS is our approach to empower neuroscience to compute the brain. Greece is represented with excellent labs in this endeavor. We are delighted to come to Athens this year and look forward to an exciting day.”

About the Human Brain Project

The Human Brain Project (HBP) is one of the largest brain science projects worldwide. As a FET Flagship project it stands among the biggest research projects ever funded by the European Union. At the interface of neuroscience and information technology, the HBP investigates the brain and its diseases with the help of highly advanced methods from computing, neuroinformatics and artificial intelligence, and in turn drives innovation in fields like brain-inspired computing and neurorobotics. As a lasting contribution to the global science community, the HBP develops EBRAINS, an open European research infrastructure that allows scientists and technology experts to seamlessly collaborate, accelerating advancements in the fields of neuroscience, computing and brain-related medicine.
