Lab study links Sb2S3/BiOBr heterojunction to H2O2 production and tetracycline removal

Core-Shell Photocatalyst Turns Antibiotic Wastewater Into Hydrogen Peroxide

An experimental materials study reports that a visible-light-responsive core-shell Sb2S3/BiOBr S-scheme heterojunction generated hydrogen peroxide while removing tetracycline hydrochloride from contaminated water without an external sacrificial agent. The composite, designated SS/BOB-0.6, produced 419.54 µmol L−1 of H2O2 within 2 hours in a solution containing 60 mg L−1 tetracycline hydrochloride, according to the journal abstract. Under the same test, the material removed 84.50% of the antibiotic. This summary is based on the published abstract; the full article was not available for independent assessment of the experimental methods or results.

The composite was designed around one-dimensional Sb2S3 microrods as the light-harvesting core, with BiOBr nanoparticles attached through in situ precipitation to form the shell. The architecture was intended to create intimate interfacial contact and improve light absorption. The optimized SS/BOB-0.6 formulation generated 2.71 times more H2O2 than was obtained in isopropanol, indicating that the measured hydrogen peroxide production was higher under the reported conditions without that sacrificial agent. The abstract does not provide the full reaction setup, replicate count, error estimates or other measures of variability.

Electron spin resonance, in-situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and radical-trapping experiments were used to support an S-scheme charge-transfer mechanism. The reported mechanism retains high-reduction-potential electrons in the Sb2S3 conduction band for an indirect two-electron oxygen-reduction pathway that yields H2O2, while high-oxidation-potential holes remain in the BiOBr valence band for direct tetracycline hydrochloride oxidation and hydroxyl-radical generation. At the interface, lower-energy electrons from BiOBr recombine with lower-energy holes from Sb2S3. These observations and mechanistic assignments are conclusions reported by the authors, rather than independently verified findings available in the supplied abstract.

The work concerns a laboratory photocatalytic material tested with a single antibiotic under visible-light illumination. Although the abstract describes simultaneous H2O2 generation and tetracycline hydrochloride mineralization as a route to converting antibiotic-contaminated wastewater into a source of a useful green oxidant, it does not report performance in real wastewater, the selectivity of the material across other contaminants, its recovery or reuse, or potential environmental and economic impacts. It also does not establish performance beyond the reported concentration, two-hour duration and optimized composite under the conditions described. The findings therefore demonstrate a materials-level proof of concept rather than a field-validated treatment process.
