Maria Konsta-Gdoutos of The University of Texas at Arlington has been elected a fellow to the European Academy of Sciences, Engineering Division.

Konsta-Gdoutos is one of eight new fellows for 2020. She is a UTA civil engineering professor and associate director of the Center for Advanced Construction Materials.

The European Academy of Sciences recognizes scientific excellence and cutting-edge fundamental and interdisciplinary science. It is an independent organization of the most distinguished scholars and engineers performing leading research and developing advanced technologies, as well as promoting science and technology and their essential roles in fostering social and economic development.

“This is a distinct honor and tremendous recognition of Professor Konsta-Gdoutos’ leading contributions in the area of high-performance cementitious nanocomposites integrating scientific advances at the boundaries of civil engineering and materials science,” UTA President Vistasp Karbhari said. “Her work with Professor Surendra Shah in developing a new center at UTA in this area is helping position us at the forefront of impactful research in an area that is critical to the development of new materials for the civil sector, and the work she is doing with our students and faculty colleagues is truly positioning UTA as a world leader in this area. I’m extremely proud of her as a UTA faculty member and look forward to hearing of many further successes and recognitions.”

In addition to high-performance smart cementitious nanocomposites, Konsta-Gdoutos’ research interests include the relationship between microstructure and structural performance of advanced cement-based nanocomposites; structured nano-modified concrete; and enhancing structural properties, durability and multifunctionality of engineered construction materials.

She helped start the new Center for Advanced Construction Materials with Shah, a National Academy of Engineering Fellow and director of the center.

“I am humbled in being elected to this revered international organization,” Konsta-Gdoutos said. “One of the most important objectives of the Academy is the promotion of fundamental research and excellence in science and technology.”

Ali Abolmaali, chair of the Department of Civil Engineering, said Konsta-Gdoutos’ honor and work positions UTA at the forefront in this sector.

“Dr. Konsta-Gdoutos is a leading teacher-scholar whose research excellence, innovation and collaborative spirit advances UTA’s efforts to pose real-world solutions to global challenges, while also providing our students with the best education possible,” Abolmaali said.
