Sulfur-vacancy SnS2–MXene prototype reaches 58.33 Wh kg−1

A sulfur-vacancy-engineered SnS2–Ti3C2Tx MXene heterostructure delivered 58.33 Wh kg−1 in a laboratory asymmetric supercapacitor at a power density of 800 W kg−1, according to a research article published in Advanced Composites and Hybrid Materials. The device used the modified heterostructure as its cathode and Ti3C2Tx MXene as its anode, and it retained approximately 96% of its capacitance after 10,000 cycles. The researchers developed a “2D-on-2D” structure by anchoring vertically aligned SnS2 nanosheets onto horizontally oriented Ti3C2Tx MXene microflakes.

They then introduced sulfur vacancies into the SnS2 component to create the Sv–SnS2–Ti3C2Tx MXene material. This defect engineering addressed the low electrical conductivity of SnS2. Density functional theory calculations supported the proposed mechanism by indicating enhanced electronic conductivity and strong Na+ adsorption in the modified heterostructure, properties that the authors associated with rapid ion transport and improved electrochemical performance.

At the electrode level, the sulfur-vacancy-engineered heterostructure reached a specific capacitance of 706 F g−1 at a current density of 2 A g−1. These are mass-normalized measurements from laboratory electrochemical testing rather than results from a commercial energy-storage product. The supplied research summary does not specify the full-cell voltage, electrode mass loading, electrolyte composition or complete component balance, so the reported device figures should be understood within the scope of the tested prototype.

The asymmetric supercapacitor combined the Sv–SnS2–Ti3C2Tx MXene cathode with a Ti3C2Tx MXene anode. Its reported energy density was 58.33 Wh kg−1 at 800 W kg−1, while approximately 96% of capacitance remained after 10,000 cycles. The article presents these results as evidence that a vertical–horizontal 2D-on-2D architecture combined with sulfur-vacancy engineering can support high electrochemical energy storage.

The work demonstrates a materials-design approach in which the orientation of two two-dimensional components and the deliberate absence of sulfur atoms are engineered together. The authors describe the method as scalable and position defect-engineered heterostructures as a route toward advanced energy-storage devices. That is a proposed development direction rather than a demonstrated commercial outcome; further evaluation would be needed to establish reproducibility, manufacturability and performance under practical device configurations.

The article is open access, and the version supplied with the research summary is an accepted manuscript that may undergo further editorial changes before the final version of record.
