The Society of Thoracic Surgeons has announced four plenary speakers for its 63rd Annual Meeting, scheduled for January 28–31, 2027, at the San Diego Convention Center. Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton; Abridge founder and CEO Shivdev Rao, MD; Howard University President Wayne A. I. Frederick, MD, MBA; and West Virginia University Chancellor Clay B. Marsh, MD will participate in the program. STS says the speakers represent fields including public service, artificial intelligence, surgery, and health care transformation, with perspectives on leadership, innovation, resilience, and the future of health care.

STS describes its annual meeting as a global gathering that brings together cardiothoracic surgeons, residents, researchers, advanced practice providers, and industry leaders to examine scientific discoveries, surgical techniques, and advances in patient care. The 2027 meeting’s theme is “Excellence. Evidence. Impact.” According to the announcement, the theme is intended to challenge attendees to think beyond current practice while considering leadership principles and forward-looking ideas for the next era of the specialty. Clinton is scheduled to appear in “A Conversation with Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton,” a session focused on leadership in government, diplomacy, and public service.

Rao will present “Building and Scaling Enterprise-Grade Clinician Intelligence,” examining how artificial intelligence is reshaping clinical practice, physician workflows, and patient care. The announcement does not report results from a particular artificial intelligence system or study, and it does not describe clinical outcomes associated with the technology. Instead, the session is listed as a plenary examination of AI’s effects on clinical work. Frederick will deliver the Vivien T. Thomas Lecture, “The Amplification of Humanity in Leadership,” while Marsh will speak on “Health Span and the Science of Longevity.”

STS President Vinay Badhwar, MD, said the Society was honored to welcome four leaders whose achievements had shaped their professions and influenced the world around them. He said their insights could inspire attendees to consider new perspectives, embrace emerging opportunities, and lead with greater purpose in a rapidly changing world. Founded in 1964, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons is a not-for-profit organization representing more than 8,000 cardiothoracic surgeons, researchers, and allied health professionals worldwide. Its stated mission is to enhance the ability of cardiothoracic surgeons to provide high-quality patient care through education, research, and advocacy, including work involving surgery of the heart, lungs, and esophagus.
