The American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) and 52 other leading academic and professional societies announced the creation the Societies Consortium on Sexual Harassment in STEMM at a panel discussion during the AAAS Annual Meeting on February 15, 2019.

“Professional societies have a responsibility to address sexual harassment. We must ensure that all individuals who want to be part of the scientific enterprise are able to do so in a space that is safe and welcoming,” said Erika Shugart, CEO of ASCB. She is also a member of the Consortium’s Executive Committee.

Along with the ASCB, other founding members of the Consortium include the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and the American Geophysical Union (AGU).

The Consortium will make research- and evidence-based resources for addressing issues of sexual harassment to other professional organizations. These resources will include model policies and procedures to use to combat issues of harassment, including policies for meeting and awards and honors. Each of the 53 member groups will contribute to the development of the model policies.

ASCB is an inclusive community of biologists studying the cell, the fundamental unit of life. We are dedicated to advancing scientific discovery, advocating sound research policies, improving education, promoting professional development, and increasing diversity in the workforce.
