Newberry, FL – May 13, 2021 – The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Foundation today announced that PatientPartner, a complimentary digital platform that connects patients awaiting surgery with patients who have undergone the same procedure, has become a premier sponsor of AWARE, the foundation’s monthly giving program. AWARE supports the Foundation’s efforts to raise money for obesity research and education and increase access to metabolic and bariatric surgery, long considered the most effective long-term treatment for severe obesity and related diseases.
“We appreciate PatientPartner’s financial support for important research and education on obesity treatment, as well as their commitment to helping patients throughout their weight loss journey,” said Paul Enochs, MD, President, ASMBS Foundation.
“We look forward to supporting the ASMBS Foundation and helping patients increase their knowledge, overcome their fears and take more control over their life and health with bariatric surgery,” said George Kramb, CEO, PatientPartner, a San Diego, CA-based company. “Working with foundations like the ASMBS Foundation is a huge step for us in continuing to support the patient community and we couldn’t be more excited for what is next.”
According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), metabolic/bariatric surgery has been shown to be the most effective and long-lasting treatment for severe obesity, resulting in significant weight loss and resolution or improvements in diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea and many other obesity-related diseases. Studies have shown that the safety of laparoscopic bariatric surgery is comparable to some of the safest and most commonly performed surgeries in the U.S., including gallbladder surgery, appendectomy and knee replacement.
Despite the availability of effective treatments, the obesity epidemic continues to grow. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), from 1999-2000 through 2017-2018, the prevalence of obesity increased from 30.5% to 42.4%.
