Oben Health Wins 2026 Kraft Prize for Community Cardiovascular Care

Oben Health has won the 2026 Kraft Prize for Excellence and Innovation in Community Health, receiving a $100,000 national award for a technology-enabled model that brings preventive cardiovascular care into trusted community settings. The Kraft Center for Community Health at Mass General Brigham announced the selection on September 14, 2026. The model uses AI-enabled screening in neighborhood barbershops and beauty salons, creating a route from cardiovascular screening toward diagnosis and treatment in communities facing persistent barriers to care. The announcement recognizes Oben Health’s community-based approach and scalability, but it does not report a controlled trial, quantify the number of people screened or provide measured reductions in hypertension, heart disease or cardiovascular disparities.

Oben Health’s platform is intended to reduce cardiovascular disparities, hypertension and heart disease in underserved communities. Rather than requiring people to enter conventional clinical spaces for preventive screening, the model converts familiar neighborhood businesses into health-screening hubs and links participants to subsequent clinical care. Its technology is described as helping address gaps in access while supporting a model that can be adapted across populations, settings and health conditions. Elsie Taveras, MD, MPH, chief community health and health equity officer at Mass General Brigham and executive director of the Kraft Center for Community Health, said Oben Health stood out for connecting trusted community spaces with healthcare and creating opportunities for cardiovascular screening, prevention and follow-up care. She characterized the approach as evidence-based and scalable, although the announcement did not specify the algorithms used, evaluation methods, clinical outcomes or the size and reach of the program.

Peter Njongwe, founder and CEO of Oben Health, said the prize would help the organization expand its technology and infrastructure, reach more medically underserved communities and demonstrate what could be possible when technology, clinical care and community trust work together. The Kraft Prize was launched in 2025 and centers on cancer, cardiometabolic disease, maternal health and substance use disorder. Applicants are required to demonstrate clear and measurable community-health impact in at least one priority area and to show community engagement in the development and implementation of their company, program or innovation. The announcement identifies Oben Health’s preventive cardiovascular work as the basis for selection, but does not disclose the specific impact measures reviewed by the award organization. The prize therefore functions as recognition and funding for an organization’s service model, not as evidence that the award itself has produced changes in cardiovascular outcomes.

Alongside the main prize, the Kraft Center announced that Malama Health had received the inaugural Kraft Impact Acceleration Award, valued at $50,000. Malama’s digital maternal-health mobile app combines remote monitoring, care navigation and doula support to expand access to care and improve maternal-health outcomes. The announcement says the award, together with additional support from Mass General Brigham Innovation, will help the company expand its platform and presence in the Northeast. It cites the organization’s rapid growth and potential for impact but does not report maternal-health outcome data from an evaluation. Mika Eddy, CEO of Malama Health, said the recognition reflected the work of doulas and parents serving pregnant and postpartum women insured by Medicaid. Last year’s Kraft Prize winner was ThriveLink, a telephonic AI enrollment solution that enables families to apply verbally for safety-net programs including health insurance, food assistance and utility support.

Oben Health and Malama Health will also have an opportunity to present at the Mass General Brigham World Medical Innovation Forum in Boston on September 22–23, 2026. The forum is expected to bring together more than 2,000 participants from different industries to collaborate on health solutions. Both winners are slated to receive tailored support from the Mass General Brigham Innovator Growth Division, including connections to relevant resources and invitations to meetings, training and other programs intended to help accelerate and scale their work. The announcement presents the awards as a combination of monetary support, institutional connections and opportunities for wider visibility, while providing no new clinical results from either organization.
