In a pioneering advancement for women’s healthcare, the Mount Sinai Health System has unveiled the Carolyn Rowan Center for Women’s Health and Wellness, poised to redefine how integrative, multidisciplinary care is delivered across a woman’s lifespan. The new 11,000-square-foot center, located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, introduces a comprehensive model that unites cutting-edge research, clinical expertise, and personalized treatment pathways aimed at optimizing women’s health outcomes through every biological transition.

This ambitious initiative was realized thanks to a generous philanthropic gift from Carolyn Rowan, a longtime trustee of Mount Sinai and lifelong advocate for advancing women’s health. The Rowan Center consolidates a wide array of specialty services, including gynecology, obstetrics, endocrinology, cardiology, behavioral health, orthopedics, and pelvic-floor therapy, alongside diagnostic modalities such as bone density scans and advanced ultrasound technology. This integration facilitates cohesive, patient-centered care that addresses the multifaceted nature of women’s health conditions.

Dr. Joanne L. Stone, the Ellen and Howard C. Katz Chair of the Raquel and Jaime Gilinski Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science, emphasized the importance of this multispecialty approach. She highlighted that women often face the challenge of navigating disjointed care systems for symptoms that are often interrelated. The Rowan Center’s design overcomes this fragmentation by fostering collaboration among specialists within a single clinical environment, enabling thorough clinical assessments and shared decision-making.

Core to the center’s innovative approach is the introduction of “MyPath” clinical care pathways—structured, personalized programs tailored to the biological and health transitions unique to women at different life stages. The inaugural offering, MyPath Balance 40+, targets women in midlife, addressing the complex interplay of hormonal shifts, cardiometabolic risk factors, bone health, brain function, sleep disturbances, and behavioral wellness. This pathway provides coordinated, longitudinal care that integrates both hormonal and non-hormonal therapies with lifestyle and supportive interventions.

Future MyPath pathways are slated to cover critical phases such as pregnancy and postpartum periods (MyPath Moms), surgical recovery (MyPath Surgical Journey), and vitality in later life decades (MyPath Vitality 60+), culminating with a focus on healthspan extension. These pathways exemplify precision medicine principles by harnessing individualized diagnostics and integrative therapies to enhance patient outcomes while promoting proactive health management.

The clinical strategy underpinning the Rowan Center has been orchestrated by Dr. Anna Barbieri, a board-certified gynecologist and integrative medicine specialist with national recognition in menopause care. Dr. Barbieri stressed that directed, coordinated management can substantially improve clinical outcomes in a domain historically underserved by fragmented care and scientific neglect. Clinical oversight and operational excellence are maintained by Dr. Francesco Callipari, who ensures that multidisciplinary integration meets the highest quality standards.

Beyond clinical care, the Rowan Center is positioned as a nexus for translational research in women’s health, spearheaded by Dr. Leslee J. Shaw of The Blavatnik Family Women’s Health Research Institute. The center is committed to advancing knowledge on sex-specific biological differences that influence disease manifestation and treatment response, especially in conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and osteoporosis, which disproportionately affect women.

The facility itself was meticulously designed to foster a calming, restorative environment conducive to healing. It features exam rooms equipped for comprehensive evaluations, pelvic floor therapy suites, outpatient procedure areas, advanced imaging rooms, and a nonstress testing suite. This thoughtful architectural planning aims to transform the patient experience, reducing stress and promoting wellbeing alongside clinical excellence.

Carolyn Rowan expressed her personal connection to Mount Sinai and her vision for the center, noting that the institution has been a cornerstone for her family’s healthcare for generations. Her philanthropic commitment reflects a deep conviction to empower women through healthcare environments where they are truly seen, heard, and supported.

Brendan G. Carr, CEO of the Mount Sinai Health System, underscored the center’s role as a blueprint for future healthcare delivery models—one that seamlessly integrates multidisciplinary expertise, leverages clinical pathways, and accelerates discovery to not only enhance care quality but also extend healthspan for women at all stages of life.

As one of the most comprehensive women’s health centers embedded within a major academic health system, the Carolyn Rowan Center exemplifies the shift toward patient-centered, integrative care models that emphasize continuity, personalization, and scientific rigor. Through this paradigm, women will benefit from holistic care strategies designed to address the complexity of their health challenges in a unified, accessible setting.

Mount Sinai’s commitment to advancing women’s health through innovation is further reflected in its robust network of clinical and research resources, supported by a vast multidisciplinary team and state-of-the-art infrastructure. The Rowan Center is a testament to Mount Sinai’s leadership in redefining health paradigms, advancing clinical excellence, and fostering discoveries that translate directly into improved patient care.

In a healthcare landscape that has long overlooked the unique and interconnected needs of women, the Carolyn Rowan Center stands out as a beacon of integrative care innovation, merging scientific insight with compassionate treatment to elevate the standard of women’s healthcare in New York City and beyond.
