Ghanaian Pediatric Oncologist Wins 2026 Roux Prize for Transforming Childhood Cancer Care

Dr. Emmanuella Amoako, a pediatric oncologist helping reshape childhood cancer care in Ghana, has been named the 2026 winner of the Roux Prize by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME). The award, which includes a US$100,000 prize, recognizes her use of clinical evidence, health data, and locally led research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancer. Her work addresses a critical gap in global health: while survival for childhood cancer exceeds 80% in many high-income countries, it remains below 30% in numerous African settings.

Amoako is the Lead Pediatric Oncologist at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where she has developed services intended to bring specialized cancer treatment closer to families. Ghana now has 12 pediatric oncologists, but specialist care remains concentrated in a small number of urban hospitals. For families living far from these centers, the journey to diagnosis and treatment can take many hours, often creating delays that allow aggressive cancers to progress. Amoako’s approach combines decentralization, referral coordination, workforce training, and research designed around the needs of Ghanaian patients.

In 2019, she established a shared-care pediatric oncology service at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. The model allows children to receive selected parts of their treatment closer to home while remaining connected to comprehensive cancer centers for complex procedures and specialist decision-making. This type of distributed care can reduce travel-related costs and interruptions, improve treatment adherence, and make it easier for families to maintain long-term contact with health services. Since its launch, the service has cared for more than 150 children and has strengthened coordination between regional and specialized facilities.

The program is particularly important because childhood cancer outcomes depend heavily on how quickly disease is recognized and treated. Cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and certain solid tumors may initially resemble common childhood illnesses. When warning signs are missed, children can arrive at hospitals with advanced disease, severe complications, or malnutrition, all of which can make treatment more difficult. By using evidence from clinical practice to identify weaknesses in referral pathways, Amoako’s team is working to reduce the interval between the first symptoms, specialist evaluation, diagnosis, and the start of therapy.

Her community-based initiative, COMPASS—Community Parents Navigating Support for Early Childhood Cancer Detection—targets that diagnostic delay directly. The program trains parents of childhood cancer survivors and primary health care workers to recognize warning signs, support families, and guide children through referrals. Its digital platform records suspected and confirmed cases, referral timelines, and stage at diagnosis. These data can help health officials identify where delays occur and determine whether interventions are improving access. During its initial months, COMPASS trained 10 parent navigators and 100 health care workers and reached more than 1,000 people through community outreach.

Amoako’s work also extends beyond service delivery into cancer genomics, a field that examines how genetic changes in tumors influence disease behavior and treatment response. African patients remain substantially underrepresented in global cancer genomic databases, meaning that diagnostic tools and precision-medicine strategies are often developed from evidence that does not adequately reflect African populations. As Director of Clinical Affairs at Yemaachi Biotech, Amoako contributes to The African Cancer Atlas, or TACA, a large-scale initiative assembling genomic and clinical information from tumor tissue and matched normal samples collected from thousands of African patients.

The scientific value of such datasets lies in their ability to reveal population-specific patterns in cancer biology. Tumors can carry genetic alterations that vary in frequency across populations, and those differences may affect prognosis, drug sensitivity, and the usefulness of molecular tests. A more representative evidence base could improve the design of clinical trials, support more accurate risk classification, and help researchers identify therapeutic targets relevant to African patients. TACA is intended to strengthen precision oncology while ensuring that advances in cancer genetics are not limited to populations already well represented in biomedical research.

Amoako is currently a Cancer Genetics Fellow at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, where she is receiving advanced training in cancer diagnosis, inherited cancer risk, and precision oncology. She plans to apply this expertise in Ghana, where genetic services and specialized pediatric cancer resources remain limited. Her professional roles also include Secretary of the Childhood Cancer Society of Ghana and part-time lecturer at the University of Cape Coast School of Medical Sciences. Her previous recognitions include the Johnson & Johnson Global Citizen Award, the ASCO International Development and Education Award, and the Pediatric Oncology Yvonne Award.

IHME Director Christopher J. L. Murray said Amoako had demonstrated how evidence can be translated into practical improvements in health care despite major access barriers. Amoako said the lessons from Cape Coast could support broader efforts to improve early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term capacity across Ghana. She also intends to use the Roux Prize funding to strengthen collaboration among African governments, regional institutions, researchers, and health care providers, with the goal of increasing investment in pediatric oncology services, workforce development, innovative diagnostics, and equitable access to treatment. She will be formally recognized at a ceremony in London on October 14, while nominations for the 2027 Roux Prize are scheduled to open on November 1, 2026.
