Fed-DATrust Enhances Federated Disaster Assessment Reliability

Researchers have introduced a framework named Fed-DATrust, a cross-stage risk-coordination method designed for task-subspace federated multimodal learning. The study, published in Complex & Intelligent Systems, addresses the challenges of reliable disaster assessment, which is described as a complex distributed decision problem. In this domain, event heterogeneity, unstable modality quality, abnormal client behavior, and predictive miscalibration interact across the learning pipeline.

The core of the Fed-DATrust system is built upon a three-class disaster damage assessment task derived from the CrisisMMD dataset. In this specific setup, shared encoders for image, text, and auxiliary audio remain fixed during the federated adaptation process. Instead of updating these foundational components, the system focuses its optimization and communication efforts on task-specific modules.

These modules include projection, fusion, gating, reconstruction, branch, and classification components, allowing for targeted adaptation without altering the underlying feature extraction architecture. At the client level, the framework integrates multiple signals to estimate sample quality and risk. These signals include reconstruction error, gating uncertainty, predictive confidence, and classification margin.

This composite risk estimate is then used to regulate dynamic adversarial training. On the server side, the aggregation process is refined through the continuous reweighting of client updates. These updates are clipped within the task subspace and reweighted based on graph isolation, local-loss deviation, and sample risk.

After aggregation, the updates are server-clipped and perturbed within the task subspace. During the inference phase, Fed-DATrust employs temperature scaling to calibrate class probabilities. Additionally, a decoupled composite anomaly score is used to support risk-based case prioritization.

Experimental results across three random seeds demonstrate the performance of the proposed framework. Fed-DATrust achieved a Macro-F1 score of 0.5829 and an expected calibration error of 0.0601. These metrics represent improvements over standard federated averaging by 0.0388 and 0.0335, respectively.

The framework also proved efficient in terms of communication, transmitting only 27.56% of the full-model parameter volume while slightly improving both accuracy and calibration measures compared to full-model aggregation. Stress tests conducted as part of the study revealed that Fed-DATrust maintains improved robustness even under conditions of missing vision data. Furthermore, the framework demonstrated competitive aggregation performance under preset malicious-client conditions.

Client-trust diagnostics indicated that quality, loss, and update-geometry cues provide complementary evidence. The findings of this study support task-subspace risk coordination as a practical design principle for developing reliable distributed multimodal intelligent systems.
