May 31, 2018 (Arlington, VA) – The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) has published two new textbooks on the topics of infection prevention and antibiotic stewardship. Both textbooks serve as valuable resources for healthcare practitioners and those in public health and provide expert guidance and helpful information from physician and pharmacist leaders on approaches to infection prevention and for strengthening existing antibiotic stewardship programs.

The fourth edition of Practical Healthcare Epidemiology (ISBN: 9781107153165, May 2018) takes a hands-on approach to infection prevention for physicians, healthcare epidemiologists, infection preventionists, microbiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. It brings together the expertise of leaders in healthcare epidemiology to provide best practice expert guidance on infection prevention for adult and pediatric patients in all types of healthcare facilities, from community hospitals and academic institutions, to long-term care and resource limited settings.

"This textbook is an excellent resource for healthcares provider in a variety of settings," Keith Kaye, MD, MPH, president of SHEA. "It's written in clear, straightforward language and outlines a number of different response and planning techniques that practitioners in public health or in the medical field will find useful."

Practical Implementation of an Antibiotic Stewardship Program, (ISBN: 9781107166172, June 2018) is a new textbook that will be an essential resource for healthcare providers in acute care, long-term care, and ambulatory care settings looking either to begin or to strengthen existing antibiotic stewardship programs. Each chapter is written by both physician and pharmacist leaders in the stewardship field and incorporates both practical knowledge, as well as evidence-based guidance.

"These textbooks, developed by leaders in the field of infectious diseases, serve as a go-to resource for clinicians and quality improvement professionals and also will be critically important in helping to train future generations of medical students, pharmacy students, residents, and infectious diseases fellows," said Kaye.

The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) is a professional society representing more than 2,000 physicians and other healthcare professionals around the world who possess expertise and passion for healthcare epidemiology, infection prevention, and antimicrobial stewardship. The society's work improves public health by establishing infection-prevention measures and supporting antibiotic stewardship among healthcare providers, hospitals, and health systems. This is accomplished by leading research studies, translating research into clinical practice, developing evidence-based policies, optimizing antibiotic stewardship, and advancing the field of healthcare epidemiology. SHEA and its members strive to improve patient outcomes and create a safer, healthier future for all.
