Energy's Hidden Role in Consciousness: A New Framework Puts Brain Metabolism in the Spotlight

Consciousness researchers have long focused on computation, information flow, and network dynamics when trying to explain how the brain binds distributed activity into unified experience. A new Hypothesis and Theory article, published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, argues that one factor has been comparatively neglected: energy. The paper, authored by Holly Pollard-Wright, an independent researcher based in Rialto, California, proposes that the way the brain organizes its energy production, distribution, allocation, and utilization across interacting neural systems may act as a biological constraint on the conditions under which large-scale neural integration associated with conscious processing can emerge and be sustained.

The author defines systems-level energetic organization as the dynamic coordination of energy production, distribution, allocation, and utilization across interacting neural systems. This is not a claim that energy creates consciousness. The article is explicit that the framework does not propose that energy generates consciousness, determines conscious content, or explains subjective experience. Instead, it positions energetic organization as an additional constraint that may influence the neural conditions under which coordinated interactions among distributed neural systems can arise, complementing rather than replacing existing theories of consciousness.

The proposal builds on established principles of brain energetics, metabolic regulation, and distributed neural organization. What the framework adds is a systems-level perspective: rather than treating regional metabolism as a local variable, it asks whether the coordination of energetic processes across networks carries explanatory value for conscious processing that regional measures alone cannot capture. The author stresses that the proposed relationship between systems-level energetic coordination and conscious neural integration remains hypothetical.

A central strength of the article is its insistence on testability. The framework generates experimentally testable predictions concerning whether systems-level energetic measures provide explanatory value beyond regional metabolism and established neurophysiological and network variables. It also sets out explicit falsification criteria, defining observations that would weaken or reject the hypothesis. By specifying in advance what evidence would count against the proposal, the author aims to establish a falsifiable research program rather than an unfalsifiable narrative, while remaining agnostic about the ultimate origin and nature of subjective experience.

The article outlines complementary routes for evaluating these predictions, including multimodal studies in humans and non-human animals, computational modeling, and carefully controlled translational investigations. Multimodal approaches could combine measures of metabolism with neurophysiological and network-level variables to test whether energetic organization adds explanatory power. Computational modeling could explore whether systems-level energetic constraints shape the dynamics of large-scale integration. Translational work, the author notes, would need careful controls to be informative.

The article was received on 12 August 2026 and accepted on 14 October 2026, and it appears in the journal’s Cognitive Neuroscience section. Its keywords span brain energy metabolism, consciousness theories, functional connectivity, large-scale neural integration, network neuroscience, neuroenergetics, and systems neuroscience, reflecting the breadth of literatures the framework draws together.

As with any Hypothesis and Theory contribution, the claims expressed are those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of affiliated organizations, the publisher, the editors, or the reviewers. The framework is presented as a research agenda: a way of directing empirical attention toward an unresolved dimension of large-scale neural integration, with the expectation that future experiments will determine whether systems-level energetic organization earns its place among the biological constraints on conscious processing.
