Dr Shaun Sabico was presented with the ESCEO-IOF Pierre Meunier Young Scientist Award at a special ceremony held on April 6 at the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis & Musculoskeletal Disease (WCO-IOF-ESCEO ’19 Paris).

The joint European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis & Musculoskeletal Diseases (ESCEO) and International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) award recognizes a young investigator who has demonstrated outstanding scientific merit early in his or her career, prior to reaching a prominent academic position, and who is expected to be a future thought-leader in the musculoskeletal field.

Following the award presentation in Paris, ESCEO President Jean-Yves Reginster stated:

“Low levels of vitamin D are a major problem worldwide and very prevalent across the Middle East, where studies have identified high levels of deficiency in the population. Dr Sabico’s commitment and achievements in advancing research and education in this important area of musculoskeletal health are exemplary. He is a highly deserving winner of this year’s ESCEO-IOF Pierre Meunier Young Scientist Award.”

Dr Sabico completed medical training at the University of Santo Tomas, Philippines and obtained a PhD in medical sciences in 2018 at Warwick Medical School, Warwick University, UK under the mentorship of Prof. Philip McTernan and Prof. Nasser Al-Daghri. Under Prof. Al-Daghri’s guidance, Dr Sabico has been instrumental in the spread of vitamin D awareness in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East region through clinical, epidemiologic, genetic and proteomic studies, and has worked with key experts to develop local and regional guidelines for vitamin D and osteoporosis. He is currently the deputy director and incoming assistant professor at the Chair for Biomarkers of Chronic Diseases in King Saud University, Saudi Arabia. His research interests include chronic diseases, vitamin D, probiotics and bone markers. He is author of more than a hundred scientific publications in these fields.
