The Research Center for Functional Molecular Systems presents the Netherlands Awards for Supramolecular Chemistry 2019. This year’s laureates, Chad A. Mirkin and Helma Wennemers, have been inspired by nature biological tools to increase structural complexity in supramolecular materials.

The Netherlands Award for Supramolecular Chemistry is awarded to Chad A. Mirkin. In 1996, he conducted the first DNA-based method for rationally assembling nanoparticles into macroscopic materials. Since then, he has pioneered the synthesis of colloidal crystals with DNA that are now routinely used for many medical diagnostic, therapeutic and materials applications. He is the George B. Rathmann Professor of Chemistry in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and the director of the International Institute for Nanotechnology at Northwestern.

The Netherlands Scholar Award for Supramolecular Chemistry is awarded to Helma Wennemers. Triggered by the understanding of nature at the molecular level, she combines the activity of peptides and the power of organic synthesis to achieve functionalities fulfilled in nature by large macromolecules. She is actively involved in the rational design and the development of peptide-based asymmetric catalysts and bioinspired molecular scaffolds for applications in supramolecular and biological chemistry. She is professor of organic chemistry at the ETH Zürich.

Chad A. Mirkin is the third recipient of the Netherlands Supramolecular Award, with Jean-Marie Lehn and Sir Fraser Stoddart. Helma Wennemers is the forth recipient of the Netherlands Supramolecular Scholar Award with Rafal Klajn, Hanadi Sleiman and Kenichiro Itami. Their contributions to science are inspiring to many chemists in the exciting field of supramolecular chemistry.

Chad A. Mirkin and Helma Wennemers will receive the awards during ICMSE 2019, the International Conference on Molecular Systems Engineering, August 18-20, in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. They will also be invited to do a lecture tour of The Netherlands and present their work at several universities.

The faculty board of the Research Center FMS is composed of Bert Meijer (Eindhoven University of Technology), Ben Feringa (University of Groningen), Roeland Nolte and Wilhelm Huck (both Radboud University Nijmegen).
