ACerS joins Consortium as inaugural member

WESTERVILLE, Ohio, April 8, 2019–The American Ceramic Society (ACerS) has joined with over 80 leading academic and professional societies as an inaugural member of the Societies Consortium on Sexual Harassment in STEMM.

“The ACerS Board of Directors recently adopted a comprehensive anti-harassment policy as part of the Society’s overall diversity and inclusion efforts. The timing of the founding of the Consortium aligned perfectly with our goals and priorities,” says ACerS president, Sylvia Johnson.

The mission of the Consortium is “to support academic and professional disciplinary societies in fulfilling their mission-driven roles as standard bearers and standard setters for excellence in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medical fields, addressing sexual harassment in all of its forms and intersectionalities.”

The establishment of the Consortium reflects a shared understanding that professional societies have a unique responsibility in their role for STEMM fields to address the pervasive problem of sexual and gender harassment.

The Societies Consortium was established in early 2019 by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and the American Geophysical Union (AGU), with EducationCounsel serving as the policy and law consultant for the initiative.

Key deliverables will include:

  • Menus of options for model policies, procedures, and evidence-based evaluative systems
  • Policy and Law guidance and related services
  • Practical implementation and evaluative tools
  • Consortium resources that reflect a national perspective and input from a wide range of organizations
  • Early access to robust, effective resources that address sexual harassment in societies’ operations and the field
  • Receipt of policy, court, and research updates related to sexual harassment
  • Invitations to meetings/calls with opportunities to actively engage with peers and experts

“ACerS is keen to ensure that none of our members suffer harassment. Joining the consortium gives ACerS access to the combined resources of many organizations with similar values and gives the Society a platform for voicing the concerns of our membership,” says Sylvia Johnson, ACerS president.
