AAAS session: Food and nutrition security

Scientific partnerships and opportunities

Leading experts from the field of food and nutrition security will present findings from its recently published report, Opportunities for future research and innovation on food and nutrition security and agriculture: The InterAcademy Partnership’s global perspective, as well as the four regional reports that contributed to the global report. This project unites the voices of 130 national academies of science and medicine across Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe. There will be time for questions and answers.

This AAAS session addresses pressing issues currently facing humanity around the world, including:

  • Why the current approach to food, nutrition, agriculture, and the environment is unsustainable and must change
  • Why the national academies of science and medicine urge policy-makers to take immediate action on climate change to improve the sustainability of global food systems
  • How the climate impacts of farming, agriculture, and food consumption could be mitigated
  • How food consumption and production must change to improve both people’s health and environmental sustainability
  • Why current approaches to food systems may not be able to meet the challenges of the next thirty years due to declining public investment in research and innovation on all aspects of food and agriculture including environmental and health impacts
  • How policymakers and society can benefit from scientific advances – including research by natural scientists and social scientists

WHO: The InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) – 130 national science academies

WHAT: A series of recently published reports about why the current approach to food, nutrition, agriculture, and the environment is unsustainable, and how science can help. (Further supporting and audiovisual material, including photos, is available here).

WHEN: Friday, 15 February 2019, 13.30-15.00 (01.30 PM-3:00 PM)

WHERE: Marriott Wardman Park: Thurgood Marshall Ballroom South

WHY: To address some of the most pressing issues facing the world with implications for the economy as well as health and climate change.
