Biogas purification review points to hybrid systems and smart controls

Biogas, produced through the anaerobic digestion of organic matter, is a vital renewable energy source that can mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and promote energy independence. A newly published review in Discover Chemical Engineering takes stock of how this raw gas is purified into a higher-value fuel, and where the field is heading next.

The review, authored by K. Kaitano Dzinavatonga, Barbra Mafuta, KeChrist Obileke and Patrick Mukumba, was published on 30 August 2026 as an open-access article. It categorizes biogas upgrading technologies into physical, chemical and biological methods, and evaluates established techniques including water scrubbing, pressure swing adsorption (PSA), chemical absorption, membrane separation and cryogenic distillation, alongside emerging biological approaches such as biofiltration.

Among these options, the authors highlight membrane separation as a technologically efficient and rapidly growing commercial alternative that has attracted significant recent research interest. Its appeal rests on its modularity and low energy intensity, together with recent advances in materials such as mixed-matrix membranes, which enhance selectivity across various scales.

Despite the breadth of technologies surveyed, the review concludes that no single method has obtained a generally accepted optimum. Instead, the findings indicate that integrating hybrid configurations, such as biofiltration coupled with pressure swing adsorption, together with smart control strategies, is essential to optimize methane recovery and cost-effectiveness.

The authors are candid about the limitations of the current evidence base. These advancements remain constrained by a lack of field-scale data and by the need for degradation-resistant materials that can withstand the demanding conditions of real biogas plants.

Looking forward, the review identifies three priority areas for future research: leveraging artificial intelligence, developing advanced materials, and designing hybrid systems.

The article is being shared early to provide faster access to peer-reviewed, accepted research. It is citable and carries a permanent DOI, but this version is subject to further edits and will be replaced automatically by the final Version of Record.

For readers tracking the biogas sector, the review’s central message is that progress will come not from a single winning technology but from combining methods intelligently, backed by better field data and more durable materials.
