Defects in meat packaging films such as micro-tears, seal failures, pinholes, delamination and structural weaknesses can compromise product integrity, creating pathways for unwanted gas exchange, moisture gain or loss, and incidental microbial contact. According to a review published in Discover Food on 20 October 2026, these changes can reduce product quality, promote early spoilage, and increase the likelihood of contamination that could threaten consumer safety, leading to food spoilage, economic losses and potential health hazards.

The review, authored by Omar A. Al-Mahmood, argues that conventional detection methods, which rely on visual inspection, manual pressure testing, dye infiltration and basic leak assessments, often miss fine micro-defects and incipient seal failures. As a result, compromised meat-packaging films can pass routine inspection even though their protective performance is impaired.

Artificial intelligence has emerged as a transformative tool for addressing these challenges, the review states, by integrating advanced imaging, sensing and computational analysis. AI-enabled technologies including computer vision, hyperspectral imaging, ultrasound, X-ray imaging, thermography and intelligent packaging enable rapid, non-destructive and highly accurate identification of defects that were previously undetectable by traditional methods.

The review synthesizes recent scientific advances in AI-based detection of defects in meat packaging films, with particular emphasis on packaging integrity, sealing defects, multilayer-film failures and complementary monitoring of packaged meat quality. It highlights deep learning architectures, data analytics and intelligent sensor systems, and links packaging-film defect detection with intra-meat defect identification.

However, the review also identifies significant obstacles. Key challenges include limited annotated datasets, class imbalance, domain shift across heterogeneous production environments, explainability requirements in regulated food systems, and the evolving characteristics of biodegradable packaging materials. These factors can complicate the deployment of AI inspection systems in real-world meat processing environments.

Emerging trends emphasized in the review include multimodal sensor fusion, edge computing, self-supervised learning and standardized validation frameworks, which the author presents as routes to improving scalability, robustness and regulatory acceptance. The review evaluates the strengths and limitations of AI-driven inspection approaches and outlines strategic directions for industrial implementation, concluding with forward-looking perspectives aimed at improving the accuracy, reliability and efficiency of defect detection systems in meat packaging applications.
