Springer Nature launches Discover Metals as open-access home for metals research

Springer Nature has launched Discover Metals, a new international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to research across all fields of metallic materials and their applications. The launch is announced in an inaugural editorial published on 16 June 2026, which lays out the journal’s aims, scope, and invitation to the global metals community to contribute.

The new journal is a continuation and expansion of Gold Bulletin, also published by Springer Nature. According to the editorial, by re-launching the title as Discover Metals the publishers aim to broaden the scope and provide a welcoming, inclusive home for studies spanning the full range of metals research, from fundamental theory and advanced characterization to manufacturing, performance, and engineering practice.

The editorial frames the renewed momentum in metals research as driven by both technological demands and sustainability goals. Applications increasingly require reliable performance under extreme conditions, including high temperatures, corrosive environments, irradiation, and complex stress states. At the same time, environmental constraints are reshaping priorities toward decarbonized metallurgy, resource efficiency, low-emission processing, greater use of secondary feedstocks, and strategies that enable repair, reuse, and high-quality recycling.

A major theme of the editorial is the role of modern characterization techniques in accelerating progress. Capabilities have expanded dramatically over recent decades across multiple length scales, from atomic-resolution methods such as modern electron microscopy and atom probe tomography to microstructural mapping with techniques like EBSD and 3D serial sectioning, and component-relevant nondestructive evaluation using X-ray and neutron methods. In situ, operando, and correlative workflows further link evolving microstructure and damage to macroscopic performance under realistic conditions. The editorial notes that such microstructural information is now gathered routinely, strengthening understanding of metals.

Computational materials science and data-enabled design are described as equally transformative. The editorial cites first-principles calculations, integrated computational materials engineering, multiscale modeling, and machine-learning-assisted alloy and process optimization as approaches reshaping how metals are understood and developed. These modeling efforts are increasingly integrated with high-throughput experimentation and advanced processing routes such as additive manufacturing. Together, the editorial argues, they enable faster exploration of composition–processing space, improved control of microstructure and defects, and more predictive microstructure–property relationships, accelerating metal and alloy development.

The scope extends beyond structural alloys. The same approaches are advancing metals as functional materials, with growing impact in catalysis, plasmonic and optical systems, magnetic and magnetocaloric materials, shape-memory alloys, and technologies for hydrogen production, storage, and transport. Across both structural and functional domains, increasingly precise control of composition, interfaces, and microstructure continues to expand the frontiers of metallic materials research, according to the editorial.

The journal welcomes contributions spanning the design, processing, and characterization of metals, alloys, intermetallics, and metal matrix composites and compounds, as well as research on functional metallic materials used in interdisciplinary fields. Through rigorous peer review and open-access dissemination, the editors state that they seek to support rapid knowledge exchange and strengthen the global metals community.

The topics list published alongside the editorial is broad. Under metal materials it includes alloys, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, intermetallics, metal composites, nanometals, precious metals, and steels. Processes and properties topics cover additive manufacturing; casting, forming, and joining; corrosion, wear, and oxidation resistance; fatigue, creep, and fracture mechanics; heat treatment; hydrometallurgy; metallurgy and extraction; mining; pyrometallurgy; and surface modification.

Functional and advanced applications form a third category, including biocompatible and biomedical metals, high-entropy alloys, high-temperature and refractory metals, magnetic and superconducting metals, metal recycling, metallic materials for energy storage and conversion, metals for green technologies, metals in electronics and semiconductors, novel alloy design, smart and self-healing metals, and sustainable metal processing. The editorial notes that this list is not exhaustive.

On governance and submissions, the editorial states that the Discover Metals editorial board brings together experienced researchers with diverse backgrounds, with members handling submitted manuscripts, promoting the journal, and proposing or guest-editing Topical Collections. The journal commits to sustainable development and welcomes papers addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Accepted article types include full-length research articles, brief communications of empirical findings, reviews, perspectives, comments, case studies, registered reports, and data notes, along with guest-edited Topical Collections on specialized topics in metals science.
