Meta-analysis links climate, motivation and knowledge to manufacturing safety behavior

A meta-analysis of employee safety behavior in manufacturing found that safety climate, safety motivation and safety knowledge are associated with workers’ safety-related actions. The review, reported in BMC Public Health, examined personal and situational antecedents across sectors such as automotive, electronics and heavy machinery production. It also found that safety knowledge and safety motivation mediate the relationship between safety climate and employee safety behavior, while safety attitudes do not.

The researchers organized the evidence using social cognition theory, a framework for examining how personal and situational factors relate to behavior. Within this approach, the analysis considered both workplace conditions and person-related factors, including motivation, knowledge and attitudes. The study was designed to identify the factors most consistently connected with employee safety behavior and to determine how those relationships fit the framework.

Three factors emerged as the main antecedents of safety behavior: safety climate, safety motivation and safety knowledge. The results also supported the claim that safety climate regulates employee safety behavior. The mediation results offer a more detailed pattern: the relationship between safety climate and safety behavior was mediated by safety knowledge and safety motivation, but not by safety attitudes. The findings therefore do not support treating a favorable safety attitude as sufficient to explain how workplace conditions relate to employees’ safety conduct.

The authors concluded that awareness of compliance with safety regulations and improvement in safety performance are insufficient on their own. For manufacturing enterprises, the results point to the importance of encouraging motivation toward safe behavior while strengthening the workplace safety climate. Because this work is a meta-analytic review rather than a trial of a new safety program, it synthesizes relationships in the available research and cannot establish that a particular intervention will automatically improve safety behavior in a specific workplace. The supplied report also does not provide details about the number or characteristics of the included studies, so the breadth and precision of the pooled evidence cannot be assessed from the abstract alone.
