An experimental study reported in the abstract of a 2026 Journal of Materials Science article found that anodization can alter the morphology and physical, mechanical and electrochemical properties of nanostructured TiO2 coatings formed on titanium foil. The research examined self-organized coatings for possible biomedical and corrosion-resistant applications, but the abstract does not describe human testing or clinical outcomes.
The researchers anodized titanium foil in an ethylene glycol-based organic electrolyte containing 0.4 wt.% NH4F at ambient temperature. Applied voltages ranged from 15 to 60 V, while treatment durations ranged from 0.5 to 9 h. According to the abstract, the resulting coating morphology and dimensions depended on the anodization parameters, indicating that the process was used to tune the resulting surface structure.
Mechanical testing showed lower nano-hardness for anodized surfaces than for untreated titanium foil. Specifically, the coating anodized at 45 V had a nano-hardness of 2.43 GPa, compared with 3.4 GPa for the untreated foil. The treated surface also became hydrophilic, reaching a reported contact angle of 0° after anodization at 60 V. The abstract further states that corrosion resistance and bioactivity were notably improved following anodization.
These findings support the use of anodization conditions to control properties of nanostructured TiO2 surfaces on titanium foil. However, the available evidence is limited to the study abstract: it does not provide numerical corrosion-resistance or bioactivity results, specify the bioactivity assessment method, or establish performance in animals or people. The reported results therefore characterize laboratory-treated surfaces and their potential relevance to biomedical implants and corrosion-resistant coatings rather than demonstrated clinical benefit.
