Bruce Arians Named 2027 Paul Bear Bryant Heart of a Champion Award Recipient

The American Heart Association has named former National Football League head coach Bruce Arians as the recipient of its 2027 Paul Bear Bryant Heart of a Champion Award, an honor presented annually with support from Houston-based St. Luke’s Health. The award recognizes individuals whose contributions have shaped the way people experience sports and who embody the qualities associated with the late Alabama coaching legend, including integrity, perseverance, determination and grit. Arians, widely regarded as one of the most innovative offensive minds in professional football, will accept the honor during the 41st annual Paul Bear Bryant Awards Ceremony on January 27, 2027, in Houston, an event that will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.

The Bryant Awards serve a dual purpose for the American Heart Association: they celebrate excellence in football coaching while generating critical funding and public awareness for the organization’s cardiovascular research and health initiatives. The connection between the award and the association’s mission is deeply personal. Paul Bear Bryant, who compiled one of the most celebrated coaching records in college football history, died from a heart attack in 1983, just 28 days after coaching his final game and announcing his retirement. His death from cardiovascular disease remains a stark reminder of the toll that heart conditions take across all populations, and the awards program has become one of the association’s signature fundraising vehicles in the sports community.

Nancy Brown, chief executive officer of the American Heart Association, said the organization selected Arians for both his professional achievements and his personal example. According to the association, Brown noted that Arians has demonstrated that true leadership is measured not only by success on the field but by the impact a person has on others, citing his resilience, integrity and deep commitment to helping people reach their full potential. She added that by sharing his own health journey with courage and authenticity, Arians has inspired countless individuals to face challenges with hope and determination.

The Heart of a Champion Award is one of five honors presented each year during the Bryant Awards Ceremony, which is presented by Memorial Hermann Health System. The other awards handed out at the event include the Lifetime Achievement Award, the Fan Favorite Award, the Newcomer Coach of the Year and the Paul Bear Bryant National Coach of the Year, the latter recognizing the top coach in college football for the preceding season. Recipients are selected annually by the Paul Bear Bryant Awards Executive Leadership Team, a group composed of members of the Bryant family and community leaders who support the fundraising campaign.

For Arians, the award carries a significance that goes beyond general admiration for Bryant’s legacy. Early in his coaching career, from 1981 to 1982, Arians served on Bryant’s staff at the University of Alabama, working as a running backs coach under the Hall of Fame legend. That direct connection makes him one of the few award recipients who can claim a personal professional link to the man the honor commemorates. Arians began his coaching career at Virginia Tech before subsequent stops at Mississippi State, Alabama and Temple University, building the foundation for a coaching journey that would eventually span more than five decades as a player, coach, mentor and advocate.

After transitioning to the professional ranks, Arians established himself as one of football’s premier offensive strategists and quarterback developers. His career included leadership roles with the Indianapolis Colts, Pittsburgh Steelers, Arizona Cardinals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Across those stops, he played a central role in the development of some of the most accomplished quarterbacks in league history, including Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Andrew Luck, Carson Palmer and Tom Brady. That reputation for maximizing quarterback performance became a defining feature of his coaching identity and a key reason for his longevity in a notoriously volatile profession.

Arians’ on-field résumé includes two Super Bowl titles as an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers and, most notably, a victory as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV. That championship made him the oldest head coach in NFL history to win a Super Bowl, accomplishing the feat at age 68. He also earned Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year honors twice, in 2012 and 2014, further cementing his standing among the elite strategists of his era. His ability to adapt offensive schemes to the strengths of his personnel, particularly his quarterbacks, has been studied and emulated throughout the coaching ranks.

Beyond the sidelines, Arians’ personal resilience has become an important part of his public story. He is a survivor of both prostate cancer and kidney cancer, health battles that he has faced with the same determination that characterized his coaching career. His openness about those experiences has helped raise awareness about cancer screening and treatment, encouraging others confronting their own diagnoses to seek care and maintain hope. That willingness to discuss serious illness publicly aligns closely with the American Heart Association’s broader emphasis on health awareness, making his selection for an award tied to a health-focused mission a natural fit.

Arians expressed deep gratitude for the recognition, stating that he is honored to be associated with Bryant’s legacy, particularly given his early career experience on Bryant’s staff. He noted that football has given him a great deal, but that the relationships, the opportunities to help others and the chance to make a difference beyond the game are what he values most, according to the association’s announcement. Fans can follow the Paul Bear Bryant Awards and track the progress of the honors through the program’s official social media channels and website, and the association is offering an exclusive virtual VIP experience for attendees interested in supporting the campaign.

The 2027 ceremony continues a four-decade tradition that has transformed a coaching legend’s memory into a sustained engine for cardiovascular research funding. As the American Heart Association continues its work against heart disease and stroke, the annual gathering in Houston serves as both a celebration of football excellence and a reminder of the urgent health mission that drives it. For Arians, the honor closes a circle that began more than forty years ago on Bryant’s Alabama practice field, linking his coaching lineage directly to the cause the award now champions.
