Ochsner Baton Rouge Adds Saturday Mammograms and Massage Event for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Baton Rouge-area women will find it noticeably easier to schedule a mammogram this month. Ochsner Baton Rouge has announced that it is expanding breast cancer screening availability throughout October, coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and will once again host its annual Massages & Mammos event, a community open house that pairs clinical screening with a relaxed, supportive atmosphere. The initiative adds extended Saturday mammography hours at two local facilities and gives women who might otherwise struggle to fit a weekday appointment into a busy schedule a realistic path to staying current on recommended screening.

The centerpiece of the campaign is the sixth annual Massages & Mammos event, scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Ochsner Medical Complex – The Grove, located at 10210 The Grove Blvd. near the Mall of Louisiana. According to the announcement, attendees can schedule their annual mammogram while enjoying complimentary chair massages, light refreshments and direct conversations with Ochsner breast health experts. The event is open to everyone, and women do not need to receive a mammogram to participate; friends and family members are welcome to attend in support of a loved one or simply to learn more about breast health.

Beyond the signature event, Ochsner is offering extended Saturday mammography hours at two locations across the remainder of the month. On Oct. 10, screening runs from 8 a.m. to noon at Ochsner Medical Complex – The Grove in conjunction with Massages & Mammos. On Oct. 17 and Oct. 31, extended hours of 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. will be available at Ochsner Medical Center – Baton Rouge, and on Oct. 24 the same extended window will be offered at Ochsner Medical Complex – The Grove. Reservations for the Massages & Mammos event can be made by calling 225-761-5380, and additional information about October screening opportunities is available through the Ochsner website.

The push for expanded access comes against a sobering statistical backdrop. According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 322,000 women in the United States are expected to be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2026. The organization estimates that the average woman has about a 13 percent chance, roughly 1 in 8, of developing breast cancer at some point during her lifetime. Those figures underline why health systems invest in campaigns like this one: the single most effective lever available against breast cancer mortality is earlier detection, and earlier detection depends on women actually showing up for screening.

The clinical logic behind mammography screening is straightforward. Because many breast cancers do not cause noticeable symptoms in their early stages, routine imaging can identify tumors before they can be felt during a physical examination or before they produce pain, skin changes or other warning signs. Detecting cancer at an earlier stage generally means more treatment options, less aggressive interventions and better outcomes. This is why Ochsner recommends that women begin scheduling annual mammograms at age 40, a guideline consistent with the direction of recent national screening recommendations that have moved toward earlier and more regular imaging for women at average risk.

Screening is only part of the equation, however. Ochsner also encourages women to be familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel and to report any changes to their healthcare provider promptly. Changes worth flagging include swelling, skin irritation or dimpling, breast or nipple pain, or thickening of the skin. Self-awareness does not replace mammography, but it complements it: a woman who knows her own baseline is better positioned to notice something unusual between annual screenings and to seek evaluation sooner rather than later.

The design of the Massages & Mammos event reflects a growing recognition within preventive medicine that barriers to screening are often practical and psychological rather than informational. Many women understand that mammograms are recommended; what keeps them from scheduling is a combination of time constraints, anxiety about the procedure and the perception of screening as an uncomfortable clinical chore. By offering chair massages, refreshments and informal access to breast health experts in a single Saturday morning setting, Ochsner is attempting to reframe the mammogram as part of a broader, more welcoming experience of self-care rather than an isolated medical errand.

The community format also serves an educational purpose. Attendees who come without intending to be screened can still learn about breast cancer screening options, gather informational materials and speak with clinicians in a low-pressure environment. The event includes complimentary Ochsner items while supplies last and opportunities to win prizes, elements that may seem lighthearted but serve a concrete public health function: they draw people through the door who might not otherwise engage with screening services, creating opportunities for conversations that can translate into scheduled appointments down the line.

For women in the Baton Rouge area, the practical takeaway is simple. Annual mammograms are recommended starting at age 40, Saturday appointments are available at two Ochsner locations throughout October, and the Oct. 10 Massages & Mammos event offers a low-barrier entry point for anyone who has been putting off screening. In-person appointments and video visits can also be scheduled online and through the MyOchsner patient portal, and information about cancer treatment services is available at Ochsner.org/EndCancer. In a year when roughly 322,000 American women are expected to face an invasive breast cancer diagnosis, the difference between a cancer caught early and one caught late often comes down to whether a screening appointment was easy enough to keep.
