Dr. Margarida D. Amaral, Principal Investigator (PI) at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (Ciências ULisboa), Portugal, has been announced as the most recent addition to the Scientific Advisory Board of Emily’s Entourage.

“I am thrilled to be able to serve on Emily’s Entourage’s Scientific Advisory Board. Together, we can work toward developing innovative treatments for the entire cystic fibrosis community”: these were the words of Dr. Margarida Amaral on the occasion of her recent addition to the Scientific Advisory Board of Emily’s Entourage, a non-profit association whose main mission is to accelerate research to find new treatments and a cure for patients with cystic fibrosis, including those with more complex genetic mutations: the nonsense mutations.

For over 20 years, Dr. Amaral’s research has been dedicated to the basic and translational research of CF. Currently leader of the Functional Genomics and Proteostasis research group at the Biosystems & Integrative Sciences Institute – BioISI at Ciências ULisboa, the overall goal of her research has been to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms of cystic fibrosis and how to effectively translate this knowledge to benefit patients. To date, Dr. Amaral has authored more than 170 international papers.

According to Dr. Chandra Ghose, Chief Scientific Officer at Emily’s Entourage, having Dr. Margarida Amaral at the Scientific Advisory Board of Emily’s Entourage is very important because “Developing breakthroughs for cystic fibrosis starts with understanding this complex disease at the most fundamental level. Dr. Amaral has spent her career working to better understand — and leverage — the pathology of the disease”. Furthermore, Dr. Chose adds that “Dr. Amaral’s expertise in rare and nonsense mutation research will be an impactful addition to our Scientific Advisory Board”.

Dr. Amaral joins other ten members of the Scientific Advisory Board – top researchers, clinicians and leaders in the cystic fibrosis health sector.
