The National Library of Medicine (NLM) will host the Lindberg-King Lecture & Scientific Symposium: Science, Society, and the Legacy of Donald A.B. Lindberg, M.D. on Thursday, September 1, 2022, via NIH Videocast. The Lindberg-King Lecture honors the legacy and contributions of former NLM Director, Donald A.B. Lindberg, MD, and former NLM Deputy Director for Research and Education, Donald West King, MD.

This day-long, virtual event, co-sponsored by the NLM and Friends of the National Library of Medicine, will bring together a diverse group of speakers from various academic and professional institutions and will explore a range of topics such as bioinformatics, precision medicine, computing, and library management. Participants can learn more and register for the symposium here.

The symposium will focus on the impact of Dr. Lindberg’s leadership on the advancement of science through research training with emphasis on medical informatics and the evolution of NLM as a research partner. The Lindberg-King keynote address will be given by Isaac Kohane, MD, PhD, Professor of Biomedical Informatics and Chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Kohane’s presentation titled, “Who will be the primary purveyor of authoritative medical knowledge to the U.S. patient?”

Isaac Kohane, MD, PhD is the inaugural Chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics and the Marion V. Nelson Professor of Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School. He develops and applies computational techniques to address disease at multiple scales—from whole healthcare systems as “living laboratories” to the functional genomics of neurodevelopment with a focus on autism. Kohane’s i2b2 project is currently deployed internationally to over 120 major academic health centers to drive discovery research in disease and pharmacovigilance (including providing evidence on drugs which ultimately contributed to “boxed warning” by the FDA). Dr. Kohane has published several hundred papers in the medical literature and authored a widely used book on Microarrays for an Integrative Genomics. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine and the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Complete details including the agenda, speaker bios, as well as reasonable accommodations can be found on NLM’s Events page. For specific questions about the Lindberg-King Lecture and Scientific Symposium, please contact the NLM Office of Communications and Public Liaison (OCPL) at [email protected].
