Houston, TX – June 9, 2026 – In a pivotal development aimed at revolutionizing healthcare delivery and fostering economic growth, West Health, a nonprofit organization renowned for its commitment to advancing healthcare and aging solutions, has officially joined the Metis initiative based in Houston. Metis stands as the world’s most expansive and sophisticated place-based brain health initiative, dedicated to promoting lifelong brain health to boost human flourishing and regional economic vitality. West Health’s involvement will specifically target the transformation of health systems to better integrate brain health care into patient treatment pathways.

Metis operates as a comprehensive ecosystem, bringing together premier academic, healthcare, and corporate institutions, including The University of Texas Medical Branch, Rice University, Memorial Hermann Health System, and Accenture. Key steering members also feature bp, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and influential leaders such as Eric Mullins. The Center for Houston’s Future orchestrates the day-to-day operations of Metis, ensuring cohesive progress across its multifaceted workstreams. West Health is set to co-chair a new and critical health systems transformation workstream that aims at embedding brain health care directly within existing healthcare infrastructures.

The integration of brain health into health systems represents a complex scientific and operational challenge, touching on neurodegenerative disease management, behavioral health, cognitive decline prevention, and mental health support. West Health’s approach leverages a data-driven and evidence-based model to create scalable brain health interventions. Their previous success at Northwestern Medicine involved one of the largest deployments of integrated behavioral health services within a single health system, emphasizing the translation of neuroscience advancements into everyday clinical practice. This integration ensures that brain health breakthroughs pass beyond research labs to deliver tangible outcomes for patients and communities.

The transformation of health systems to prioritize brain health is consequential not just for clinical outcomes but also for workforce productivity and economic sustainability. According to West Health President Tim Lash, brain health care advancements reverberate through society by enabling early diagnosis of cognitive impairments and timely interventions that keep individuals, especially aging populations, engaged in the workforce and community. When brain health is prioritized, employers see improved productivity, families maintain caregiving stability, and health systems optimize resource allocation. This connection forms the economic backbone of Metis’ vision.

Houston’s health systems play a pivotal role far beyond treatment delivery; they are key economic engines and innovation hubs in the region. The Texas Medical Center alone employs over 106,000 individuals and contributes $25 billion annually to the economy. Healthcare is projected to be the largest source of job creation in Houston for 2026, adding more than 14,000 new positions. Through Metis and West Health’s efforts, brain health transformation is poised to accelerate this growth by improving the cognitive and mental well-being of the regional workforce, thereby enhancing Houston’s competitive edge as a global health science hub.

Center for Houston’s Future CEO David Gow highlights West Health’s integration strategy as uniquely impactful. Unlike peripheral programs that fund or study brain health externally, West Health embeds care models within health systems’ operational fabric. This method produces replicable, sustainable models that other health regions can adopt. The new health systems transformation workstream within Metis will pilot innovations in patient care pathways, clinical decision support, and comprehensive mental health integration, aiming to create a national blueprint that standardizes brain health as a core component of healthcare delivery.

Metis itself comprises several concurrent workstreams, each addressing different aspects of brain health and cognitive wellness. These include early brain development, workplace brain health strategies, healthy aging practices, cutting-edge scientific research, and rigorous measurement and tracking of brain health metrics. The integration of these workstreams will result in a holistic strategy that transcends siloed interventions, harnessing multidisciplinary expertise to realize substantial improvements in population brain health metrics and economic outcomes.

The partnership between West Health and Metis underscores the growing recognition that brain health is central to the future of healthcare innovation and economic development. Brain disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s, depression, and other cognitive impairments, constitute some of the most pressing health and economic challenges worldwide. Innovations in biomarkers, digital therapeutics, telehealth, and personalized medicine are rapidly evolving, and embedding these into health systems is essential to scale their benefits across populations effectively.

West Health’s mission aligns with reducing healthcare costs through innovation, ensuring that seniors and aging populations can maintain dignity and independence with high-quality care that addresses brain health proactively. Their model integrates clinical care, policy advocacy, and philanthropic support to catalyze systemic change. The Houston region, with its robust healthcare infrastructure and commitment to innovation, is a natural proving ground for these efforts, where scientific advances in brain health can be swiftly translated into practice.

With Houston’s health systems serving as both caregivers and economic pillars, the impact of brain health transformation extends beyond individual patients to entire communities and industries. A workforce equipped with resilient cognitive functioning drives innovation, sustains economic growth, and adapts more effectively to technological and social shifts. The Metis initiative, bolstered by West Health’s leadership, seeks to realize this vision by fostering ecosystem-wide collaboration and committing to demonstrable, scalable outcomes.

As the health systems transformation workstream gains momentum, it will emphasize deploying integrated behavioral health strategies, leveraging advanced data analytics, and fostering partnerships among clinical, academic, and corporate stakeholders. This multifaceted approach aims to embed brain health within preventive care, chronic disease management, and acute clinical settings, ensuring that cognitive health metrics become as routine and actionable as traditional vital signs.

In summary, West Health’s engagement with Metis represents a critical step forward in the quest to elevate brain health on both healthcare and economic agendas. The collaboration promises to produce real-world models that bridge the gap between scientific discovery and patient care, ultimately enhancing economic resilience and quality of life in the Houston region and potentially serving as a national exemplar for integrated brain health care.
