The Department of Design at UNIST has once again been recognized for design excellence, worldwide. They announced that ten of their design products and concepts have been honored with the iF Design Awards 2021.

Among many other outstanding design and innovation achievements, those who have been honored with the iF Design Awards 2021 are Professor KwanMyung Kim, Professor Chajoong Kim, Professor Hwang Kim, Professor Young-Woo Park, Professor Kyungho Lee, Professor Hui Sung Lee, and their design teams.

The design team, jointly led by Professor Chajoong Kim and Professor Young-Woo Park, paid attention to the challenges at COVID-19 testing sites. In collaboration with Professor Tek-Jin Nam and his design team from KAIST, they proposed a COVID-19 quarantine ward pass box design concept, namely TOQUE. It is a unique design solution, creating a two-way passage with UV sterilization and communication functions to aid communication between medical staff and patients in and outside the quarantine ward.

The joint design team, led by Professor Hwang Kim and Professor KwanMyung Kim won two main awards for proposing two design concepts, namely Wave Hat and Wave App. The team has been recognized for its excellence in smart safety helmets and driving application designs that can prevent safety by measuring various biological signals, such as brain waves of construction workers. The design of this product is meaningful because it worked with HHS, a company in Ulsan.

Professor Hwang Kim’s design team has also been recognized for design excellence for showcasing two digital service platforms: Legato, a digital service platform to enhance musical collaboration, and Hitpan, a digital service that suggests cosmetics and beauty creator contents based on personalized user experience. The Booklet, which has been jointly carried out by Professor Hwang Kim and Professor Huisung Lee, received positive reviews for bringing brick-and-mortar bookstores into the world of online.

Several mobile app designs that can be used in healthcare sector have also been selected as prize winners. Professor Hwang Kim’s design team has been recognized for design excellence for proposing Echo, a healthcare platform that assists diabetic patients with blood glucose monitoring, as well as beHAV, a digital healthcare platform for psychiatric patients. Professor Kyung Ho Lee’s team has also been honored with an award for proposing Skina, a social media platform that helps normalize and embrace imperfect skin.

Professor KwanMyung Kim’s design team won the main prize for proposing GOOPI, a data-driven elbow joint rehabilitation device. It has been designed to provide personalized rehabilitation based on the data collected in the course of routine care both at homes and small-scale hospitals.

Meanwhile, the iF Design Awards have been held by the world’s oldest independent design organization, iF International Forum Design GmbH. It has been regarded as one of the most prestigious design competitions in the world. The competition this year has been especially fierce with over 10,000 entries submitted from 52 different countries.
