Springer Nature Honours 2026 Editors of Distinction for Peer Review Excellence

Springer Nature has announced the recipients of its Editor of Distinction Awards for 2026, an annual programme that recognises the academic editors whose behind-the-scenes work underpins the reliability of the published scientific record. Among the journals taking part this year is BMC Geriatrics, a peer-reviewed open access venue dedicated to research on ageing and the health of older adults. The 2026 honours list for the journal names dozens of editors across two distinct award categories, each of which targets a different stage of the editorial pipeline that turns a submitted manuscript into a published article.

The first of the two categories, the Springer Nature Editorial Contribution Award, is given for meticulous assessment of submissions and rigorous management of the peer review process. According to the award description, this work safeguards the scientific accuracy of the published record. In practical terms, it covers the often invisible labour of reading incoming manuscripts, judging whether they fall within scope and meet basic methodological standards, selecting appropriate external reviewers, weighing conflicting referee reports, and deciding whether a paper should be revised, rejected, or accepted. Thirty editors associated with BMC Geriatrics appear on this year’s Editorial Contribution list, reflecting the volume of submissions a busy geriatrics journal must process and the breadth of expertise needed to evaluate them.

The named recipients of the Editorial Contribution Award span a wide range of countries and disciplines connected to ageing research. The list includes A R M Saifuddin Ekram, Agnieszka Wiśniowska-Szurlej, Antoine Christiaens, Bart Spaetgens, Chang Dae Lee, Chen Pao-Huan, Ellen Freiberger, Esma Nur Kolbasi Dogan, Francesco Curcio, Gu Eon Kang, Guogui Huang, Hui-Chuan Hsu, Javier Jerez-Roig, Jonathan K. L. Mak, Kazuhiro Miyata, Koen Milisen, Krystal Warmoth, Padmore Adusei Amoah, Qingsong Chang, Seyedeh Saleheh Mortazavi, Shanshan Shen, Shirin Vellani, Silvia Giovannini, Stefano Cacciatore, Takashi Mori, Tino Prell, Tsuyoshi Harada, Xue-Qiang Wang, Yang Zhao and Zeynep Şahiner. The spread of names across Europe, East Asia, South Asia, the Middle East and beyond illustrates how modern editorial boards function as internationally distributed networks rather than as committees based at a single institution.

The second category, the Springer Nature Author Service Award, recognises exceptional service in improving the author experience and ensuring that the peer review process is efficient, constructive and fair. This award highlights a dimension of editing that receives less attention than gatekeeping but is arguably just as consequential for the health of a journal. Editors who excel in author service handle queries promptly, communicate decisions with clear and respectful explanations, guide authors through revision cycles, and help ensure that reviewers’ criticisms are delivered in a form that authors can act upon. Thirty editors are named in this category for 2026.

The Author Service Award list comprises Alex Smithson, Bart Spaetgens, Bartłomiej K. Sołtysik, Chang Dae Lee, Chen Pao-Huan, Cheng Lei, Dario Calafiore, Dongshan Zhu, Fan Yang, Fengjuan Hu, Franziska Saxer, Gustave Mabiama, Hao Luo, Hui-Chuan Hsu, Ippei Chiba, Jaehoon Seol, Javier Jerez-Roig, Jonathan K. L. Mak, Kazuhiro Miyata, Krystal Warmoth, Lisa Kouladjian Odonnell, Luís Sousa, Monika Pathania, Peng Nie, Shiou Liang Wee, Shirin Vellani, Tsuyoshi Harada, Xuewen Wang, Yanfeng Jiang and Yeji Hwang. Several editors, including Bart Spaetgens, Chang Dae Lee, Chen Pao-Huan, Hui-Chuan Hsu, Javier Jerez-Roig, Jonathan K. L. Mak, Kazuhiro Miyata, Krystal Warmoth, Shirin Vellani and Tsuyoshi Harada, appear on both lists, indicating that their contributions covered both the scientific scrutiny of submissions and the support of authors navigating the review process.

The rationale behind such awards lies in the structure of modern scholarly publishing. Most journals, including those in the BMC series, rely on practicing researchers who serve as academic editors alongside their own laboratory, clinical or teaching commitments. These editors are typically not professional employees of the publisher in the way that staff editors are; they are scientists and clinicians who volunteer substantial time to evaluate work in their fields. Because peer review is the primary quality-control mechanism in science, the diligence of these editors directly affects which findings enter the literature and in what form. A poorly managed review process can allow flawed studies to be published or drive solid work out of the field altogether, while a well-managed one can strengthen papers through constructive revision.

In geriatrics, the stakes of that quality control are particularly visible. Research on older adults often involves complex study designs, including longitudinal cohorts, frailty assessments, polypharmacy analyses, falls prevention trials and studies of dementia care, each of which carries methodological pitfalls that generalist reviewers may miss. Editorial boards with specialists in geriatric medicine, nursing, rehabilitation, epidemiology and social gerontology are better positioned to catch problems such as inappropriate outcome measures, inadequate adjustment for comorbidity, or unrepresentative sampling of very old populations. The international composition of the BMC Geriatrics award list suggests an editorial structure designed to draw on that range of expertise across time zones and health systems.

The awards also draw attention to the growing professionalisation of editorial work within academic publishing. Springer Nature frames the programme as a celebration of editors’ dedication to their journals and research communities, citing activities that range from developing networks for authors and peer reviewers to helping authors improve their papers and advocating for their journal communities. Such recognition matters for the researchers involved, because editorial service is often undervalued in academic career assessment, where published papers and grants dominate. Formal awards provide a documented, citable acknowledgement of service that hiring committees and promotion panels can weigh alongside conventional research outputs.

For the research community, the announcement serves a second function: it makes the human infrastructure of peer review visible. Readers routinely encounter the phrase peer reviewed as a guarantee of quality, yet the process depends on named individuals who choose reviewers, arbitrate disagreements, and enforce standards of statistical reporting and ethical compliance. Recognising editors by name, as the 2026 Editor of Distinction Awards do, reminds authors and reviewers alike that the system is maintained by colleagues rather than by an anonymous apparatus, and that its fairness and speed depend on the habits of those individuals.

The 2026 honours for BMC Geriatrics therefore read as both a celebration and a snapshot of how a contemporary open access journal operates. Two award categories, sixty distinct names, and a shared emphasis on rigour, fairness and constructive engagement with authors together describe the qualities that the publisher considers essential to trustworthy publishing. As submission volumes across scientific journals continue to grow, the work of the editors recognised this year, from meticulous assessment of submissions to the day-to-day service that keeps review processes efficient and fair, will remain central to the credibility of the geriatrics literature and of the scientific record more broadly.
