Seafood intake may help close nutrition gaps in Brazil, study suggests

Brazil’s long coastline and rich marine life should, in theory, make seafood a nutritional powerhouse. Yet a new nationwide analysis suggests that the country’s seafood intake remains too low to meaningfully close common diet-related gaps. The study, published in Nature Food, combines household dietary records from more than 30,000 participants with nutrient data for protein sources and regional fisheries statistics.

Researchers calculated average seafood consumption and then linked intake levels to deficits in key nutrients. They report that Brazilians consume an average of 5.3 kilograms of seafood per person per year—below recommended targets. Instead of acting as a reliable buffer against micronutrient shortfalls, seafood is currently an underused resource in many diets.

The team focused on nutritional shortfalls that remain widespread, including vitamin A and calcium deficiencies. Using the nutrient composition of protein sources, they estimated how changes in seafood intake could shift population-level risk patterns. Their approach treats seafood not only as a food item, but as a targeted delivery mechanism for specific nutrients.

Next, the study projected health outcomes under scenarios that increase seafood’s share of total protein intake. The results are striking: raising seafood consumption from 6% to 25% of total protein could substantially reduce deficiencies. In other words, the nutritional payoff depends not only on eating more, but on integrating seafood strategically into protein choices.

However, the authors also highlight a supply constraint. In several Brazilian states, seafood demand would exceed what fisheries can provide, limiting how far catch levels can realistically rise. This finding reframes the policy challenge: simply urging higher consumption may not be enough.

To address this, the study emphasizes the need for smarter governance and sustainable seafood strategies. Rather than maximizing seafood production at all costs, the authors argue for nutrient-informed targeting—prioritizing seafood in diets where its specific nutrient contributions can deliver the greatest public health gains.

Finally, the work suggests that Brazil’s marine resources could play a more central role in nutrition if fisheries management improves and policies align with nutritional objectives. The message is clear: closing nutrition gaps will require coordination across nutrition science, market demand, and ecological limits.
