Uninterruptible power supply systems, the backup devices that keep electricity flowing when the grid fails, are the subject of a new state-of-the-art review published in Discover Applied Sciences on 28 October 2026.
The review, authored by Joan Akankunda, Abdullahi Bala Kunya, Bashir Olaniyi Sadiq and Awafung Emmanuel Adie, is an open-access paper that examines UPS technologies across their design architectures, control schemes and real-world deployments.
According to the abstract, the authors assess advanced control schemes that enhance voltage regulation, frequency stability, power quality and battery lifecycle management.
The paper also surveys power sharing and redundancy management, the practices that allow multiple UPS units to operate together so that no single failure interrupts the supply.
Methodologically, the study is a review of recent literature and technological advancements rather than a new experimental or simulation study. Its findings therefore synthesize what has been reported across the field rather than presenting newly measured performance results.
The authors state that the paper aims to guide both researchers and practitioners in developing more efficient, intelligent and reliable power backup solutions, and to offer insight into the evolution and future direction of UPS technology.
As the article is being shared early as a peer-reviewed, accepted manuscript, it remains citable under a permanent DOI while being subject to further edits before the final version of record is published.
