Researchers have introduced a strengthened version of a nature-inspired optimization method called the Artificial Lemming Algorithm, reporting that the new High-Performance Artificial Lemming Algorithm, or HPALA, performed competitively on standard benchmark tests and on several demanding engineering design problems. The work, published in Cluster Computing on 22 October 2026 as Volume 29, article number 882, aims to address the growing complexity and non-linear constraints that characterize modern engineering optimization. The original Artificial Lemming Algorithm offers a novel framework for swarm coordination, but its search capability in complex optimization landscapes may occasionally be hindered by premature convergence or local stagnation, situations in which candidate solutions settle too early on suboptimal answers.
To counter this, the team integrated multi-strategy synergetic search mechanisms into the lemming optimization framework. According to the study, these mechanisms are intended to help improve the balance between global exploration of the search space and local exploitation of promising regions. The optimization performance of HPALA was evaluated on three widely used benchmark suites: CEC2017, CEC2019, and CEC2022.
Across these numerical testbeds, the algorithm demonstrated competitive convergence fidelity and numerical stability in comparison with representative optimizers, including LSHADE_SPACMA and mLSHADE_SPACMA. The study describes these results as empirical findings from the tested suites rather than guarantees of superiority across every possible optimization scenario. Beyond abstract benchmarks, the researchers assessed practical applicability on four classic structural engineering design problems: the pressure vessel design problem, the three-bar truss problem, the welded beam problem, and the tension/compression spring optimization problem.
The study also applied HPALA to a more demanding scenario, a complex three-dimensional multi-UAV trajectory optimization task. According to the authors, the algorithm showed promising performance in generating smooth and collision-free flight paths while maintaining favorable computational efficiency. The authors state that these empirical findings suggest HPALA can serve as an effective and promising tool for addressing complex real-world engineering optimization challenges.
The published article includes the algorithm's figures and pseudocode, providing the technical basis for the documented comparisons against LSHADE_SPACMA and mLSHADE_SPACMA. The research team included XingTong Hang, YaHong Zhai, Mao Xi, YiFei Zhang, and LongYan Xu.
