NEWPORT, R.I. – Newport Hospital has again been named a Guardian of Excellence Award recipient by Press Ganey Associates, Inc. for superior care provided by the hospital's Vanderbilt Rehabilitation Center inpatient unit. Press Ganey, a leading health care performance improvement and analytics organization, recognizes top-performing health care organizations with the distinction for consistently reaching the 95th percentile for patient experience.

"I couldn't be more proud of the expert care given to patients undergoing rehabilitation at Newport Hospital," said Crista F. Durand, president of Newport Hospital. "Our entire Vanderbilt Rehabilitation Center team shows such dedication to their work and tremendous compassion to the many patients they treat every day."

Every year, the Press Ganey awards honor health care organizations with the nationally recognized symbol of achievement. Award recipients must sustain performance in the top five percent consistently for every reporting period in that year. The 2016 award is based on patient experience from May 2015 through April 2016.

The Vanderbilt Rehabilitation Center at Newport Hospital has a history of extremely high patient satisfaction scores and outstanding outcomes for its comprehensive inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services. It is accredited by the Joint Commission and its inpatient rehab program has also achieved accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for commitment to reducing risk, addressing health and safety concerns, respecting cultural and individual preferences, and providing the best possible quality of care. Newport Hospital recently expanded its rehabilitation services with the launch of a physiatry service line and the addition of two physiatrists who work closely with the hospital's Vanderbilt Rehabilitation Center staff, providing medical support, enhancing services, and completing the continuum of care on both the inpatient and outpatient sides.

"Receiving this recognition for the third straight year is evidence that a patient-centered approach is firmly ingrained in the way our rehabilitation team provides care," said Melissa Fournier, PT, manager of inpatient rehab services for Lifespan, including the Vanderbilt inpatient rehab unit. "Our team really connects with patients and their families. They treat and teach them by involving them in the process, and as a result, build trusting relationships that help motivate patients and invest them in the rehabilitation process."

The Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence award represents an important recognition from the industry's leader in measuring, understanding and improving the patient experience.

"We are honored to recognize Newport Hospital with the Guardian of Excellence award for the third year in a row," said Patrick T. Ryan, CEO of Press Ganey. "Their commitment to advancing the overall quality and experience of health care is evidenced by sustaining this level of excellence and we are proud to partner with them in the shared mission of reducing patient suffering."
