New Open-Access Journal Launches to scrutinize Digital and Aligner Orthodontics

Orthodontics is undergoing a transformation that extends well beyond the move from brackets and wires to clear aligners. According to an editorial published on 12 May 2026 in the new open-access journal Digital and Aligner Orthodontics, the convergence of digital technologies, artificial intelligence, advanced biomaterials, and data-driven treatment planning is reshaping how clinicians diagnose, plan, monitor, and deliver care. The editorial, written by Ravindra Nanda and Sarah Abu Arqub, serves as the inaugural article of the journal, which is designated as Volume 1, article number 1.

The new publication is a peer-reviewed journal devoted to advancing scholarship in digital orthodontics and aligner therapy. Its stated scope covers high-quality original research, systematic reviews, clinical trials, technological innovations, and evidence-based clinical reports related to clear aligners, digital workflows, artificial intelligence, 3D imaging, treatment simulation, and remote monitoring. The editors describe the journal as a focused platform intended to connect innovation with clinical practice.

A central theme of the editorial is that the journal’s mission goes beyond simply documenting technological progress. The editors state a commitment to critically evaluating emerging tools and methods, separating genuine clinical value from unsubstantiated promise. In an era of accelerating digital integration, they write, the journal aims to serve as a trusted scientific resource for clinicians, researchers, and educators seeking evidence-based guidance in digital orthodontic care.

The editorial identifies several rapidly emerging technologies that have created both opportunities and challenges for the field. These include clear aligner therapy, direct-printed appliances, virtual treatment simulation, and tele-orthodontics. According to the authors, fundamental questions regarding treatment accuracy, biological response, patient compliance, and long-term outcomes remain incompletely resolved. The editors argue that while these technologies offer considerable promise, their clinical validity, ethical implications, and generalizability must be rigorously examined.

A notable concern raised in the editorial involves the growing reliance on proprietary algorithms and closed digital ecosystems. The authors state that this reliance has raised issues related to transparency, reproducibility, ethical oversight, and standardization. They position the new journal as uniquely placed to address these critical issues by prioritizing methodologically sound, clinically relevant research that advances innovation while upholding accountability.

Open access publishing is described as central to the journal’s mission. The editors note that orthodontic innovation is a global endeavor, yet access to scientific knowledge remains uneven across institutions and regions. By making all articles freely and universally accessible online, the journal aims to maximize the dissemination and impact of research findings. The editorial states that open access enhances visibility, expands readership, and may increase citation potential, facilitating the timely translation of evidence into clinical practice. It also enables clinicians, educators, and researchers regardless of institutional resources to engage with the latest scientific advances.

Under the journal’s publishing model, authors retain copyright to their work, permitting broad sharing and reuse with appropriate attribution. The planned article types include original research, systematic reviews, clinical studies, technical innovations, and case reports. The editors particularly encourage submissions that integrate clinical relevance with technological innovation, as well as studies that critically evaluate emerging tools and workflows.

All manuscripts will undergo rigorous peer review conducted by independent experts in the field, who will evaluate submissions based on originality, methodological rigor, clarity of presentation, and clinical relevance. The journal is supported by an international Editorial Board composed of specialists in orthodontics, digital dentistry, and related disciplines. Upon acceptance, articles will be published online immediately following professional copyediting and typesetting, a continuous publication model the editors say minimizes delays between discovery and application.

In closing, the editors invite clinicians, researchers, and educators worldwide to participate, arguing that as orthodontics evolves, the framework through which knowledge is generated, evaluated, and disseminated must evolve as well. They frame the journal as a forum for contemporary orthodontic science and practice that fosters innovation while upholding evidence-based standards, with the stated goal of defining a future for the field that serves the interests of both practitioners and patients.
