NCI Website Spreads Proven Cancer Control Programs into Primary Care

The US National Cancer Institute maintains the Evidence-Based Cancer Control Programs (EBCCP) website as a strategy for disseminating effective interventions to professionals who can put them into practice, including 79 interventions tested in clinical settings such as primary care. Writing in BMC Primary Care, NCI researchers Aubrey Villalobos, Jennifer Damonte and David A. Chambers describe the resource as a comment piece on how research-tested programs reach the clinicians and communities that can use them.

Eligibility criteria for inclusion are published on the website, and NCI is now inviting intervention developers to submit their outcomes papers so that as many eligible EBIs as possible can be disseminated. The agency also seeks information about EBCCP-listed interventions that are being used in practice, which it plans to present as case studies to illustrate real-world implementation.

According to the authors, EBCCP has shown promise as a strategy for disseminating EBIs. The website also offers adaptation guidelines for teams that need to modify an intervention for a new population or setting, along with an insights page covering how the programs are being applied.

The authors frame the effort as a work in progress rather than a finished product. They welcome feedback and collaboration from investigators and implementation partners alike on the usability of the website and on the use of EBIs in practice, describing this input as central to their goal of continuous improvement in serving the public’s health. For primary care professionals, the practical message is that a curated, openly accessible library of tested cancer control programs exists, and that the institute behind it is actively recruiting both new evidence and documented examples of programs succeeding outside the research setting.
