An experimental phase-equilibrium study has mapped the high-temperature liquidus surface of the MnTe–SnTe–Bi2Te3 pseudoternary system, identifying 12 primary crystallization fields and five isopleth sections for tracing how compositions transform during cooling. The results establish composition–temperature regions for preparing single-phase Mn/Sn-substituted layered tellurides and controlled multiphase assemblages, offering a practical framework for designing magnetic topological-insulator materials with carefully controlled chemistry.
Researchers prepared more than 55 alloys from pre-synthesized MnTe, SnTe, and Bi2Te3 compounds using melt quenching followed by prolonged annealing. Differential thermal analysis was used to determine phase-transition temperatures, while powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy characterized phase compositions, lattice parameters, and microstructural features. These measurements were then combined to construct the liquidus-surface projection and analyze crystallization sequences, invariant and monovariant reactions, and subsolidus phase relations.
A central result was the confirmation of continuous Mn/Sn-substituted solid solutions along three homologous layered-compound series: MnBi2Te4–SnBi2Te4, MnBi4Te7–SnBi4Te7, and MnBi6Te10–SnBi6Te10. Within these sections, the lattice parameters increased linearly with increasing Sn content, indicating that the layered phases can be compositionally tuned rather than existing only as fixed compounds. The phase diagram therefore links measurable changes in crystal structure to specific compositional regions of the pseudoternary system.
The work is primarily a materials-chemistry and phase-equilibrium investigation, not a demonstration of improved magnetic or electronic performance. Its immediate contribution is a thermodynamic and crystallographic guide to synthesis: the identified primary fields and isopleths show how alloy composition and cooling path can be used to select desired phases, while the solid-solution ranges clarify where Mn and Sn can substitute within homologous structures. Further evaluation would still be needed to establish how the controlled compositions and microstructures affect the targeted properties of Mn-containing bismuth tellurides.
