NEWPORT, R.I. – June Martin, RN, a 40-year veteran of the Newport Hospital nursing staff, is the recipient of the Press Ganey 2016 Nurse of the Year Award. The prestigious national honor singles out one direct care nurse each year who has made outstanding contributions to his or her organization, demonstrating strong leadership, clinical expertise and exemplary care.

Martin was presented with the award at the Press Ganey National Client Conference on November 2 in Orlando, Florida.

"June's expertise and sense of sharing does not end with the nurse/patient relationship," said Orla Brandos, RN, DNP, vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer at Newport Hospital. "June has been invested in the training and orientation of so many of our nurses for many years. She readily shares her knowledge and skills with all employees and has served as a mentor to younger nurses. It is an honor for Newport Hospital to have such a talented, inspirational, dedicated and compassionate nurse caring for our patients."

The Press Ganey Nurse of the Year Award recognizes the contributions of an outstanding direct-care nurse who has demonstrated a commitment to care innovation, transformation and collaboration that supports an exceptional patient experience.

"Nurses are at the forefront of the mission to reduce suffering and deliver patient-centered care," said Christy Dempsey, Chief Nursing Officer, Press Ganey. "June exemplifies compassionate connected care and it is an honor to acknowledge her commitment and contributions to both her patients and her peers."

"Bedside nursing is what I love to do," said Martin, a resident of Middletown. "It is different every day. Some of my patients require intense nursing care, and it is my responsibility to ensure that they and their family members have the knowledge and skills to ensure their continuing care needs are met and they have a speedy, smooth recovery. We are very fortunate at Newport Hospital to have nursing administration that strives for and supports excellence in nursing practice and patient care."

"It is a joy to have patients and family members remember you for the care you provided them or their loved ones," Martin added. "The satisfaction you feel when someone recognizes that your nursing care made a positive impact on them is so rewarding!"

A leader in nursing and patient education, Martin started working at Newport Hospital after graduating from Newport Hospital School of Nursing 41 years ago, and has served as a Newport Hospital medical-surgical nurse ever since. Certified in medical-surgical nursing, Martin achieved Clinical III status on the hospital's clinical ladder in 2006.
