Hybrid multi-agent model links capacity pricing and ancillary services in Chinese market simulation

Researchers have developed a hybrid multi-agent system (Hybrid-MAS) modeling method that coordinates two electricity-market functions usually handled separately: capacity-price formation and ancillary-service dispatch. The work, published in Energy Informatics, addresses a structural weakness in regional markets with high renewable penetration, where capacity pricing and ancillary-service allocation are commonly optimized by separate models operating at different time scales. According to the authors, that separation can produce inconsistent price and dispatch signals when net-load forecasts change rapidly or when flexible resources compete across energy, reserve, and regulation products.

The method formulates capacity pricing and ancillary-service allocation as a constrained partially observable Markov game. Generation, storage, and load-aggregation agents generate local dispatch and bidding proposals under a centralized training and decentralized execution scheme. Three optimization layers work together: a genetic-search layer updates block-wise capacity-price coefficients, a particle-swarm layer refines the allocation of regulation and reserve, and a quadratic feasibility-projection layer maps joint actions onto the physically feasible operating region, ensuring that proposed market actions can actually be executed by the power system.

To test the framework, the team evaluated it on a modified IEEE 118-bus system calibrated with quarter-hour operating samples drawn from an anonymized southern regional profile, corresponding to the Southern China electricity market context of the study. The Hybrid-MAS approach was benchmarked against rule-based, mixed-integer, and learning-based schedulers across a battery of tests covering comparative performance, ablation of components, disturbance conditions, missing data, and scalability.

The reported results indicate that the coordinated architecture improves capacity matching and ancillary-service fulfillment, stabilizes capacity-price corrections, reduces operating cost and reserve shortage, and maintains executable market actions under multiple uncertainty conditions. In other words, jointly optimizing the two market functions allowed price signals and dispatch decisions to remain consistent even when forecasts shifted quickly or flexible resources had to be shared across energy, reserve, and regulation products.

The authors position Hybrid-MAS as a reproducible market-simulation and dispatch-decision framework for coordinating short-horizon capacity-price correction with ancillary-service allocation. Because the framework couples a game-theoretic market formulation with metaheuristic search and feasibility projection, it is intended to serve both as a research testbed for market design and as a decision-support tool for system operators managing high-renewable regional grids. The article is open access and was published on 17 September 2026; the published version is an accepted-manuscript release subject to further edits before the final Version of Record.
