The January issue of CHEST journal includes 56 articles, clinically relevant research, reviews, case series, commentary and more. “The first issue of 2022 features the latest research in a variety of areas, including two new articles from our Equity in Health Care series, ‘Addressing Sex Disparities in Lung Cancer Screening Eligibility’ and ‘Addressing Race in Pulmonary Function Testing by Aligning Intent and Evidence With Practice and Perception,’” says Editor in Chief of the journal, Peter Mazzone, MD, MPH, FCCP. “Started in 2020, this series is a collection of journal articles focused on disparities in health and health care and the progress being made to eliminate these disparities.”
Also included in the current issue of the journal CHEST:
- Critical Care
A propensity-matched cohort study, “Early Tracheostomy for Managing ICU Capacity During the COVID-19 Outbreak,” suggests that the earlier the tracheostomy, the better the patient’s prognosis and the higher the maintenance of ICU resource capacity. A visual abstract for this research can be viewed here. - Diffuse Lung Disease
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused acute lung injury in millions of individuals worldwide. “How I Do It: Lung Transplantation of COVID-19 Patients” discusses how lung transplant providers approach lung transplantation for COVID-19-related acute respiratory distress syndrome or post-COVID-19 fibrosis.
- Education and Clinical Practice
Looking at ozone effects on lung function in children, “Systematic Review of Ozone Effects on Human Lung Function, 2013 Through 2020” suggests that, even at levels well below the current EPA standard, children’s lung function might be adversely affected by ozone exposure, particularly over longer periods.
- Sleep
In a randomized trial conducted on patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), “Reboxetine Plus Oxybutynin for OSA Treatment” highlights potential possibilities for pharmacologic treatment of OSA. A visual abstract for this research can be viewed here.
