WASHINGTON, July 11, 2017 — Journalists registering for the American Chemical Society's (ACS') 254th National Meeting & Exposition will have a wealth of new scientific information available for their news stories. Nearly 9,400 presentations are planned on a wide range of topics from health to the environment. The meeting, one of the largest scientific conferences of the year, will be held Aug. 20-24 in Washington, D.C.

The link for press registration is https://www.xpressreg.net/register/ACSF0817/media/reginfo.asp.

The theme of the meeting is "Chemistry's Impact on the Global Economy," but a variety of sessions also will focus on breakthroughs in medicine, food and the environment. These are some of the planned symposia:

  • Science & Perception of Climate Change
  • Monitoring Water Quality & Infrastructure to Prevent Future Flints
  • Journey to Mars: Materials, Energy & Life Sciences
  • Food Additives & Packaging
  • Advances in Analytical Forensic Chemistry & Toxicology
  • 1-D Nanomaterials: Synthesis, Assembly, Properties & Applications
  • Addiction: The Unmet Medical Need of the 21st Century
  • Chemophobia: Communicating Chemistry
  • Instrumentation & Methods to Characterize Nanomaterials Critical to the Global Economy
  • Social Media for Science Advocacy in Public Policy

ACS provides complimentary registration to national meetings to reporters (staff and freelance) and public information officers from government, non-profit and educational institutions. Marketing and public relations professionals, lobbyists and scientists do not qualify as press and must register via the main meeting registration page. Journal managing editors, book commissioning editors, acquisitions editors, publishers and those who do not produce news for a publication or institution also do not qualify.

ACS will operate a press center in the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Room 154A, which will be fully staffed to assist in arranging interviews. The press center will have Wi-Fi, computers and refreshments. Press conferences will be held in Room 154B.

Embargoed copies of press releases and a press conference schedule will be available in early Aug. Reporters planning to cover the meeting from their home bases will have access to the press conferences on YouTube at http://bit.ly/ACSLive_DC.

The American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society, is a not-for-profit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. ACS is a global leader in providing access to chemistry-related information and research through its multiple databases, peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences. ACS does not conduct research, but publishes and publicizes peer-reviewed scientific studies. Its main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.
