Green Innovation and Renewable Investment Drive Green Growth in G20 Economies

A new empirical study of the world’s largest economies finds that green technological innovation, investment in renewable energy infrastructure, and economic complexity are the key drivers of green growth across G20 countries. The research, published in Energy, Sustainability and Society, reports that a 1% increase in environmental innovation is associated with a 0.627% improvement in green growth, while a 1% rise in economic complexity corresponds to a 0.429% increase in green growth. Both associations were described as favorable and statistically significant in the study’s long-term analysis.

The study set out to examine how G20 nations, as the largest and most influential economies, can balance environmental sustainability with economic growth. According to the authors, important factors influencing green growth include the availability of resources, developments in green technologies, economic complexity, and calculated clean energy investments, all of which they argue must be aligned with environmental priorities. Green growth is framed in the paper as a transformative strategy aimed at driving innovation and marking a shift in approaches to global environmental stewardship and economic development.

Methodologically, the researchers employed second-generation panel tests, including the Driscoll-Kraay method, to address econometric challenges that commonly arise in panel data. The authors state that the insights from the analysis provide a roadmap for future sustainable development.

The Economic Complexity Index, used in the study to measure economic complexity, focuses on the volume and diversification of a country’s exports. The positive elasticity between economic complexity and green growth suggests that economies with more diversified and sophisticated export structures tend to see greater gains in green growth, according to the reported coefficients. The study emphasizes that economic complexity fosters environmental sustainability rather than undermining it, positioning diversified industrial economies as better placed to pursue greener development paths.

However, the findings also identify significant constraints. Population growth, rising energy demand, and resource exploitation are reported as challenges that pose obstacles to green growth in the G20.

Based on the results, the authors conclude that G20 countries must prioritize green technologies, expand renewable energy adoption, and invest in sustainable energy infrastructure to achieve a sustainable and greener future. They argue that efficient resource management, strategic energy transitions, and innovation in complex economies are essential for advancing the G20’s sustainability vision and fostering the sustainable development of its member countries.

The study’s elasticity estimates offer a quantified picture of the relationships at play. The 0.627% improvement in green growth per 1% increase in environmental innovation indicates a relatively strong response, while the 0.429% figure for economic complexity suggests a somewhat smaller but still meaningful effect. Both coefficients were reported as positive, meaning the variables move in the same direction in the long-term analysis.

As an open access article published on 10 September 2026, the research is available to policymakers and researchers worldwide. The authors note that the findings underline the importance of adopting environmentally sustainable technologies as part of a broader strategy for green growth.
