Female Guinea baboons don’t favor males better at obtaining or sharing meat

For years, scientists have wondered whether a male baboon’s ability to capture and share meat might function as a powerful social advertisement—much like a successful hunt can enhance a man’s reputation in human hunter-gatherer societies. A new study of wild Guinea baboons suggests that the answer is more complicated. Although males acquire and distribute much of the meat eaten within their social units, females do not appear to prefer males simply because they are better hunters or more generous sharers. Instead, age and other physical or social characteristics may play a far greater role in determining male reproductive success.

The study, published in the American Journal of Biological Anthropology, examined Guinea baboons (Papio papio) living near the DPZ field station at Simenti in Senegal. Guinea baboons are especially valuable for evolutionary research because their societies are organized into several nested social levels. The smallest and most important unit contains a primary male, one or more associated females, and their offspring. This arrangement resembles, in broad structural terms, the core family groups found within human societies, making the species a useful comparative model for studying the origins of cooperation, mating relationships and food sharing.

Researchers from the Cognitive Ethology Laboratory at the German Primate Center analyzed nine years of behavioral observations. Their dataset combined detailed records from 109 meat-eating events with demographic and behavioral information on 465 individually identified baboons. The researchers tracked which animal acquired the prey, which individuals received meat, and how frequently males transferred portions to females. They then used statistical models to test whether male hunting success or meat-sharing behavior was associated with the number of females in a male’s unit or with the duration of female-male associations.

The findings challenge the assumption that female baboons are heavily dependent on their primary male for access to animal protein. In 11 percent of the recorded events, a female herself caught the prey, representing the first documented observations of this behavior in Guinea baboons. In addition, 41 percent of the meat consumed by females came from sources other than their primary male. These sources included prey captured by other individuals and, importantly, prey caught by the females themselves. The results indicate that female access to meat is more flexible than earlier studies had suggested.

Previous research led by William J. O’Hearn found that male Guinea baboons could transfer as much as 40 percent of the prey they captured to females in their social unit. That pattern initially appeared consistent with a system in which males provided valuable food and females relied on them for access to meat. The new analysis does not deny that males contribute substantially to female diets, but it shows that this contribution is only one part of a broader network of food acquisition. Because females can obtain meat through several routes, the nutritional value of a male’s hunting skill may not be decisive when females choose or remain with a partner.

The statistical results also found no relationship between a male’s rate of prey acquisition and his mating success. Males that caught prey more frequently did not necessarily have more females in their units, nor did they maintain female associations for longer periods. The same absence of an effect was found for meat sharing. A male that transferred meat more often was not demonstrably more attractive as a social or reproductive partner. In evolutionary terms, this suggests that hunting and sharing may not operate as reliable “quality signals,” because females cannot consistently use those behaviors to identify males with superior genetic, social or survival-related traits.

Instead, the strongest factor associated with the number of females in a male’s unit was age. Males in their early to mid-prime years had more associated females than older males. This pattern may reflect changes in physical condition, social rank, competitive ability or the ability to defend relationships during the male’s reproductive peak. The study did not establish exactly why age was so influential, but it indicates that reproductive success in Guinea baboons is likely shaped by a combination of life-history factors rather than a single conspicuous behavior such as meat acquisition.

The researchers suggest that females may evaluate other signals when making reproductive decisions. One possibility is the intensity of reddish coloration on the male’s rump, a physical trait that may provide information about condition or hormonal state. Similar color signals have been linked to male quality in other primates. Females could also respond to social behaviors, including how males interact with offspring, whether they protect or tolerate females, and how they behave toward rivals and other members of the unit. These traits may provide more continuous or dependable information than rare hunting events.

The findings also highlight an important difference between Guinea baboons and human hunter-gatherers. In many human societies, successful hunting and the public distribution of meat can create a reputation for skill, generosity and reliability. Such reputations may influence alliances, status and partner choice because hunting can be frequent, highly visible and economically important. Among wild Guinea baboons, however, meat-eating events are relatively uncommon. When a behavior occurs infrequently, it may provide too few opportunities for females to assess a male’s consistent ability. The study therefore suggests that even closely comparable social systems can evolve different mating signals when ecological conditions change. Where females have multiple ways to obtain meat, a male’s hunting performance may be impressive—but not necessarily decisive.
